Free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira has reached agreement with the New York Yankees on an eight-year contract worth more than $170 million, a source involved in the negotiations tells ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

The Yankees swooped in on Teixeira on Tuesday when it was believed the Boston Red Sox or the Washington Nationals were the likeliest of his future employer. The Red Sox's offer was believed to be in the range of $170 million, and the Nationals reached out with an offer perhaps greater than that of Boston.

unfair.

worst analysis i've possibly ever read.proven stats for 4 seasons, yet suddenly suggesting that he is worth nothing.

another reason why baseball is pointless to watch. half the teams are minor leagues for the major market teams.

god I spend countless hours at bars trying to explain this very point to boston fans blinded by the red sox hype machine... MLB is a fucking joke of a league, and a slap in the face of competition.

baseball reminds me of college football before the 85 scholarship limit when teams like Ohio State, Michigan and ND would take players so other teams couldn't have them and then those guys would sit for their career.

I mean what is it like being a KC fan or Pitt. I don't even know why they have teams and even why fans pay major league prices to watch minor league baseball.

Congratulations New York Yankees, barring major injuries you have just won the 2009 World Series.

Watch Man-Ram go to the Angels now.

Reagins & Moreno have been denying interest all along but I'm calling BS. Moreno would love to stick it to the boys in blue & capture even more of the SoCal Latino market.

This is a joke, why don't we just have the Olympic team play the rest of the NBA and see if they can win it.

I hope CC's or AJ's arm snaps like Dave Dravecky.

I think he is being overpaid, but he has 5 consecutive 100+ rbi seasons, so you need to buy a clue.

Yankee fans won't settle for anything less than a World Series win now which puts a lot of pressure on the entire club.

As far as The Red Sox goes they are now free to improve one or hopefully two of their three weak spots, a catcher who can hit a little, another solid starter so they can use Tim Wakfield in his customary 5th spot in the rotation and some reliable middle relief. I think they will definitely pick up one or maybe two relievers but the catcher and another starter could be problems. I know there are prospects that could surprise ala Jason Lester.

Losing Veritek if they do will have a profund effect on the pitching staff even if his bat has barely moved above the Mendoza line.

He has been a great backstop and handler of pitchers for this Red Sox team since 1999. Tek is only the third Red Sox player to be named Captain in the modern era, in 2005 he joined Carl Yazstremski and Jim Rice as Red Sox Captains. The free agent market being what it is, no one is breaking Tek's door down to sign him especially with Scott Boras as an agent. Time for Theo to do that voodoo that he does so well at catcher. I say Tek plays for the Sox again this year.

Getting back to The Yanks, lets not forget that in order to get their now big three free agents they dumped first baseman Jason Giambi ($21 million in 2008), righthander Carl Pavano ($11 million), outfielder Bobby Abreu ($16 million), lefthander Andy Pettitte ($16 million) and righthander Mike Mussina ($11 million) off their payroll.

Bottom line is they still have to play the games...

Wil,
The whole "skill" of calling games that Varitek supposedly possesses is probably complete BS. He calls a whole bunch of fastballs, and does nothing else that sets him apart from others at the position as far as calling games goes. It's all hype. There is no evidence that catchers that are supposedly "great game callers" have any more than a negligable effect on pither performance, just as there is no evidence of the opposite. If not for his pitchers, Varitek would be nothing but a footnote in Red Sox history. Beckett and Lester are studs (and were before Varitek), Matsuzaka might benefit from a different catcher and is pretty damn good too, Buccholz was/will be a stud regardless of Varitek's "influence." His bat has been horrendous/an embarrasment the last 2 years or so.

We are going to have to agree to disagree, I have been watching big league baseball for over 50 years (went to my first MLB game in 1958) and I am sticking to my guns on Veritek.

Happy Holidays to you and yours, wil...
