Help me out someone in the know, please...

I have friend whom said he could make 80k in two months working on the Alaskan pipeline, etc...granted he has no education or whatever and no knowledge of the oil industry

I have heard similar rumors before about fishing boats and/ or oil pipelines

I told him no fucking way on Earth...

Is he full of shit? Can you make that kind of scrilla working in such short amounts of time in Alaska...does anyone know about high paying jobs in Alaska???

Yes, he is correct. However, keep in mind you may not return or if you do return, you maybe missing a few digits or limb.

They pay a ton of money, but it is very, very hard work and very dangerous.

"The Deadliest Catch" on Discovery talks about crab fishermen in the Bering Sea. You haven't seen that show?

I know they make pretty good money, but not sure how much in average.

I have 2 college degrees, etc and barely scrape 40k plus drop that izzy gambling

The thought of pulling 80 k etc in a few months let alone a year, is shocking

Funk beat me to it. Good show. I remember the first season I watched where almost an entire crew died after their boat sank. I believe one guy survived.

I know a couple of guys that were going to, one guy did. He worked in the oil fields. He got hurt badly, lost full use of his left arm.

These guys work 18-20 hour days everyday. Trust me, it sounds great, but honestly, there is a reason they pay people without education 80K to do this kind of work.

If you are on a ship and you hit an iceberg in the Bering Straits, you may not seen anyone again.

I don't know if you are considering it, but you have to be strong and mentally it is very taxing. I can understand sometimes it appears that this is the best option. Also, the fisherman are not guaranteed anything. If they don't collect enough fish that make them money, 2 months down the drain.

Dude, trust me. I know how you feel. i was recently laid off and it seems I have a better chance of making it on the Senior PGA Tour than I do of finding a job and I am only 33.

Unless they started drilling in ANWAR area, there has'nt been any major pipeline work since they finished the alaska pipeline in early 80s.
I worked in Dutch Harbor, Alaska in early 90s and was making $22 per hour as a carpenter, but we worked 12 hours a day 7 days a week (mostly).
straight time first 40 hours, time and a half to 60 hours and double time over 60 hours. so as a grunt I was making 11k a month plus room and board.
If you have a skill like engineer, crane operater, helicopter pilot, etc.. maybe you can pull in that much but you either work all the time and have no life or you only work 6 or 7 months a year and fly back and forth.
If you dont know someone and dont have a needed skill you wont get a job at all, and in general there are not a lot of those type jobs.
Dutch Harbor is crawling with illegal mexicans and asians who work in the fish plants for minimum wage.
