Robert Plant is top seed in rock n' roll poll while Mick Jagger just scrapes the top ten

He's one of our most beloved rock stars famous for his huge mouth, snake hips and distinctive vocal style.

But Mick Jagger has come only ninth in a poll of the greatest voices in rock.
It was the high-pitched rough-edged wail of Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant that won the title after he came first in a vote organised by digital radio station Planet Rock.

Led ahead: Zeppelin's Robert Plant, left, beat the Stones' Mick Jagger, right

But despite the surprise placing for Jagger, the top ten names in the 40-strong list, unveiled on air yesterday, featured several other British rock heavyweights.
Freddie Mercury came second, Paul Rodgers of Free came next while Who frontman Roger Daltrey came fifth.

The only female voice on the list was that of Janis Joplin.

The Greatest Voice in Rock Top 40 was compiled by the station's DJs, presenters and listeners, plus musicians, rock critics and experts such as Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath, Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music, Ian Anderson from Yes and Led Zeppelin biographer Mick Wall.

Legends: David Bowie, left, came eleventh after Axl Rose, right, who was seventh

Planet Rock Programming Director Trevor White said: ‘It’s great to see Britain has produced the top three greatest rock vocalists of all time.'
But despite Plant's enduring popularity with fans and his peers, he refuses to go back on tour with Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham for a Zeppelin re-union.

I personally think Freddie Mercury is the greatest rock/pop voice ever, and Queen was the greatest rock/pop band ever.
Having said that, you can argue with me Plant all day and neither one of us would be wrong.

What Plant/Zep did to the rock world was historical, they are the godfathers of heavy metal, and 35 plus years are still the standard of that genre.

Both bands are totally different, both front men are totally different, both lead guitartists are totally different, Plant was/is 50 years ahead of his time, Plant experimented all the time. Listen to "Whole Lotta Love". He's using echo chambers, which in the early 70's were unheard of.
Convesely, Mercury liked to use his voice naturally, and Brian May liked to use his guitar without artificial noises.
Read the linear notes on any Queen album, Brian May goes out of his way to note, "no sythesizers were used".
Queen was the greatest four part harmony band ever, and I'd put the quartet of Mercury/May/Taylor/Deacon up against Plant/Page/JPJ (who was the greatest rock bass player ever) and Bonham.

Springsteen has a very unique voice, similar to Dylan's, both are superior songwriters, however unlike Dylan, you can't duplicate the passion in Springsteen's voice.
Listen to Bruce on 'Backstreets". You can't fake the passion in his voice when he moans/screams right before Miami Steve's guitar solo. If those 30 seconds of music doesn't do it for you, then Jack, you dead.

Springsteen is probably the most charasmatic and energetic live performer the game has ever seen, J. Geils is in that class, but Geils never had the success Bruce had.
I have seen Bruce go 6 hours straight. Incredible.

Here's a live version of Backstreets.
Love Bruce or hate Bruce, you can't possibly tell me with a straight face that this isn't one of the most passionated voices and songs ever performed.

This was very early in his career and why he was dubbed "The Boss"

I like the list, though Jeff Buckley deserves a spot even though his career was cut short.
