The Denver Post reported on New Year's Day that the San Francisco Giants are "quietly making an aggressive play" for free agent slugger Manny Ramirez, who appears to lack for serious suitors so far this offseason despite finishing the 2008 season with two sizzling months for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The San Jose Mercury News was more cautious, however, noting that Giants general manager Brian Sabean said a week ago that the team has no interest in pursuing another outfielder. Said the report: "Sabean told the Mercury News . . . that the organization probably would not be 'proactive' in pursuing players seeking contracts in the $100 million range.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras, told Los Angeles GMNed Colletti that he was seeking a deal similar to the $90 million, five-year contract the Giants gave [Barry] Bonds in 2002 when Colletti was the Giants' assistant GM. Boras turned down the Dodgers' $45 million, two-year offer for Ramirez last month." . .

Baseball's hot stove season is well underway, teams can now sign free agents that aren't their own, and we're taking a look at some of the bigger names that could be in play (either via free agency or trade) as the Red Sox look to reload this offseason.

According to the Los Angeles Times on Dec. 31, "the Dodgers' on-again, off-again negotiations with Ramirez appear to be on again." Boras said he contacted the Dodgers Tuesday, one day after Colletti told The Times that Ramirez remained "our first choice." The Times also reported the Dodgers had begun exploring possible alternatives in Bobby Abreu and Adam Dunn. The Dodgers offered Ramirez a two-year, $45-million contract in early November, then withdrew the offer after Boras declined to propose a counteroffer . . .

According to the New York Daily News, the Mets are not likely to make a run at Manny: "A club source said the Mets still are not likely to pursue Ramirez, even if he seems to have precious few pursuers now that the Yankees have Teixeira and the Angels are telling people they won't sign him."
