Pat Burrell and Milton Bradley jump start free agent market

Apparently baseball's agents, GMs and corner outfielders appreciate their holiday time just as much as we bloggers do. After a mostly dormant two-week period, the hot stove is cooking again with the news that Pat Burrell is headed to Tampa Bay for two years while Milton Bradley will sign a three-year deal to play at Wrigley with the Cubs.
At two years, $16 million, Burrell's agreement is the type of deal anyone not named Pat Burrell has to like. The 32-year-old outfielder was undoubtedly expecting bigger numbers, but the newfound option to DH should preserve his health and give him the ability to work toward a contract after this one. Though I would've preferred to see Adam Dunn land at The Trop, the addition of Burrell at that price was probably too good for Andrew Friedman and his brain trust to pass up — not to mention a much better option than settling for a bargain-priced Ken Griffey.
After acknowledging his ability to switch hit and the entertainment value he'll bring to Wrigley's big top, it's a little harder to feel unabashed optimism toward Bradley's three-year, $30 million deal. Yes, he mashed the ball for a career resurgence in '08, but he's as big an injury risk as anyone in MLB and it's hard to stomach that prospect a week after the Cubs traded away the always-versatile Mark DeRosa. Also, after a run of right fielders that included Jeromy Burnitz, Jacque Jones and Kosuke Fukudome, it's hard to imagine that the brittle and volatile Bradley will be the one to break the Curse of Sammy Sosa — at least for the entire length of the contract.
Then again, I enjoyed talking with Bradley at the All-Star Game in July and perhaps he'll be able to continue doing his thing in Chicago while staying out of trouble. We'll see.

Don't feel bad my Cards didn't do shit either. Glad they didn't pay 30 mil for Bradley though. That guy knows how to divide a team.

Bradley is one of the most talented players in the game if he could stay healthy. Defensive plus and does it all on offense (including the underrated taking walks).

Burrell is not even close to as good.

i like m bradley too. the guy can actually carry you for small stretches. don't know if i want him at 3 yrs. staying healthy def an issue. but he's damm good. intense media w/cubs could be the wrong club for him. he'll have some huge games at wrigley.

I'm thrilled about the addition of Bradley. If he can stay healthy and play the outfield consistently I think it will be a very nice addition for the Cubs. The lineup has been way too right-handed in years past. It will be nice to see a left-handed bat in the middle of their lineup, perhaps breaking up Lee and Ramirez. That .999 OPS last year is extremely impressive.

Burrel was not that good in the National league now he goes to the Amercian league where there are some real MLB pitchers, beside the fact that he won't be playing in that wiffleball park in Philly.

Angry Philly fan? You really believe the pitching in the American League is worlds ahead of the NL? Fuck Burrell and Bradley.

Yes the AL pitching is better than the NL, not light years ahead, but look what Sabathia did to the NL coming from the AL where imo he wasn't as good as he was in the NL. Maybe i'm wrong, but thats how i am calling it.

I'd take Burrell over Bradley though. I like Bradley, but he has too many question marks surrounding him. He's a tremendious athlete though when he isn't a dickface.

I hate the Cubs, but Bradley has mellowed since he got off the 'roids. Might be a good pickup. Or he might charge into the stands with a bat. Who knows?

Bradley is a better hitter than Burrell, no doubt, but Burrell is a good clubhouse guy .... as a Phils fan I'd take Ibanez over either of them :toast:
