Buddy and I were talking about this last night. Neither of us played D1 ball due to injuries our freshman year in college, but love coaching and love football. How hard would it be to become (yes eventually after a long road) an assistant in a D1 football program? What would have to be the most likely route not having an 'in' or knowing someone?
I would assume somehow you would have too get your foot in the door with a graduate assistant job. This would be like being an intern meaning you arent getting paid for your work. The problem with these jobs are that they are usually given too former players who are looking for the same thing, like a favor from the coaches for all their hard work thru the years in the program.
Not too rain on anyone's parade but I would honestly think you could choose just about any other route in life and get further along in 5 years. I am all about living your dreams out but be expecting 3 years of almost nothing. Lots of sacrifices would have too be made. Now maybe going to something lower then D-1 might help speed the process up also. Good luck!!!

If I can get an undergrad assistant job at a Big Ten school with a GPA of 2.10, anything is possible(still pissed for getting only a "B" in my coaching of football class with fellow classmate Bobby Stoops).
Furthermore, take a look at a few guys that are currently head coaches...........this makes anyones chances of landing an assistant job with the desire to do so easily attainable.

You don't have to start at the DI level. You can actually work your way up from the high schools ranks relatively quickly if you netword properly (work the camps and volunteer for higher profile guys). It's a lot of shit work at first obviously.
A friend of mine worked his way from a HS HC to D3 HC to small D1 Asst, to small D1 HC to mid major HC in just about 10 years.

you need to know someone to get an assistant coaching job. A guy I played college ball with's uncle in John Belien. After he graduated he got a GA job on his WVU team that made a run to the sweet 16. I believe it was 04? He always wanted to be a coach and had the motivation to do so, but after that I think it was his last year coaching, and that's even with his uncle being one of the best D1 coaches in the country. it just shows how hard it is to become a coach. You need to have either played big time basketball, or have an amazing contact. Coaching is something I really regret not doing. After I got done playing ball in college I really regret not getting a GA job and taking it from there. I played the game my whole life, and know the fundamentals of the game from an average joe standpoint as good as anyone. I am almost positive I would have been an excellent coach. FCUK ME!!!
