I bought my grandmother's house last year and we went through a lawyer and did everything the legal way. We came up with a purchase price and an interest amount. I am starting to do my taxes and am wondering how I claim the mortgage interest I paid? It looks like I need to fill out form 1098 which asks for the lenders name, address, identification number, etc. My grandmother doesn't have an identification number does she? What do I need to do to claim the mortgage interest where a private person (my grandmother) is the mortgage holder? Thanks.

nevermind, I think I receive the 1098 form if I had a mortgage through a lender. I belive found where I can just enter the mortgage holders name, address and social security number to do what I need to do.

Your Grandmother should issue you a form 1098 for the mortgage interest you paid on the house this past year. You would take the deduction on your Sch A and she should report the amount as mortgage interest income on her tax return. Her tax ID would be her social security number.
