I saw one of those informercial type shows about trading f/x from home, never been easier, yadda, yadda, blah, blah.

It seems to me that this could be a great way to get your head ripped off monetarily. I saw testimonials from people who have never traded anything before and now they think they're George Soros? I worked for years on a bank trading floor so I've seen it all but this could be like crack to some.

Wouldn't it be better to use the CME or CBOT to trade options and futures on whatever underlying that turns you on rather than downloading some broker or dealer's f/x platform and getting ripped by the spread? At least there is some regulatory protection for exchange traded instruments.

You are 100% right. But the commericals target the people who have no idea that currency futures are traded on Exchanges, with very tight spreads - 1 tick on the majors!

The shady forex network nails you with fees and large spreads and interest charges. And guess what, nothing stops them from giving you 'custom' prices - If you should be up 100 pips, they can quote you up 20. No recourse, unless you have another broker at the true price to take the other side. But they are counting on the fact that you are a newb and have no idea what the 'real' forex quotes are.

Stick to a quality discounter like Interactive Brokers, there you can trade both exchange and spot prices - cheaply, with respectable quotes and spreads.

FOREX is a very, very tough game. Good luck.
