Super Bowl Props

By Mike Harrison

Super Bowl XLIII kicks-off Sunday, making today (Friday) the last day you’ll have to listen to the loudmouth from accounting (who had to ask which teams were in the Super Bowl a week ago) talking about all the props for the big game…except for on Monday when he wants to review everything.

Props, props and more props…that’s what everyone keeps talking about heading into Sunday’s matchup, particularly the casual fan and the mainstream media.

Not much has changed in terms of the pointspread and Total; in fact nothing has changed all week. The Pittsburgh Steelers are still favored by a TD over the Arizona Cardinals; the Total is still sitting at 47; the Steelers are -245 on the moneyline while the Cards are +205.

I looked at Super Bowl props last week, but with a ton of new ones showing up this week, I wanted to go through some of the more unique offerings and see what bettors are putting their money on.

- All Hail The President Prop
If you caught Matt Lauer on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, you heard that the Today Show host would be interviewing newly-elected U.S. president Barack Obama during the Super Bowl pre-game. This of course produced a slew of Obama-related prop offerings. SPORTSBETTING.com has a handful of these Obama wagers up.

One of them, “Which team will president Obama mention first?” The Steelers (-120) or the Cardinals (-110)?, is getting quite a bit of attention from players.

According to an Associated Press report, the prez is going for the Steelers and that mirrors the action as SPORTSBETTING.com reports that 60% of the action is on the Steelers for this prop.

- Tribute to Bleeding Gums Murphy Prop
Remember the episode of The Simpsons where Bleeding Gums Murphy does a 26 minute rendition of the Star Spangled Banner?

Let’s hope Jennifer Hudson, who is singing the national anthem this year, isn’t a big Bleeding Gums Murphy fan.

At SPORTSBETTING.com you can wager on how long the anthem will be.

Bettors have the choice to go “Over” or “Under” on the length of The Star Spangled Banner, with the Total set at 2 minutes and 1 second; Over will pay out at -150, Under at +120.

A nice majority of the betting action, 75% to be exact, is coming in on the Under which could be reflective of the same proposition a few years ago when Billy Joel went Under when singing the anthem.

- Milli Vanilli Prop
When Whitney Houston sang the national anthem back in Super Bowl XXV controversy arose when it was revealed later that she was lip-synching.

You can wager on whether Jennifer Hudson will “Milli Vanilli” the national anthem; Yes is listed at +110 and No at -140.

No is seeing 60% of the betting volume.

- Sticky Shower Prop
One of the traditions in football (and a boring tired one at that, but nevertheless…) sees a team that is about to win a notable game showering the coach with Gatorade in the contest’s waning seconds.

When do you think the winning coach will get the Gatorade shower this year? With Over 45 seconds left in the fourth quarter (-140) or Under (+110)?

At SPORTSBETTING.com bettors think the game will be already won before the last 45 seconds ticks away, so 65% are betting on the coach getting doused with more than 45 seconds left on the clock.

- Give Thanks Prop
The winner of the MVP usually gives the obligatory “I’m going to Disneyland or Disneyworld,” speech after receiving the Pete Rozelle trophy and on top of that thanks a handful of people.

SPORTSBETTING.com has a number of options in its “Who will the Super Bowl XLIII MVP thank first” prop with God (-125) and teammates (+200) favored the most.

With the ever-religious Kurt Warner quarterbacking the Cardinals the Big Guy Upstairs is seeing 70% of the volume as the first person who gets thanked.

A similar prop involving the winning coach is also available and God (+120) and team (-150) are also listed but in this case the “Team” option is seeing most of the action at 80%.

Have some fun with the prop plays and enjoy the big game.
