for people that like to learn about how something 'stupid' trigger an incredible chain reaction of events that lead to the invention of 'x' I recommend a series called "Connections" by James Burke
you can buy it in Amazon......(or download it from the internet as it is very expensive)
there have been sequels 2,3 and so on ......but nothing beats the original
I watched it as a kid in Costa Rica and it is one of those things that change you forever. Of course when I watched it in English (the guy is from the UK) I thought it sucked, the appocaliptic tone of voice of the Spanish version can't be matched (specially when I watched this during the late 70s/early 80s where nuclear armageddon was around the corner)
for example: it tells you how the need for the priests to have a way to wake up to pray in the middle of the 14th century......leads inventions related to computers.
