How do foreign actors lose their accents in movies?

I always wondered this......there are so many actors/actresses that I had no idea they were English/Scottish/Australian until I heard them interviewed. Yet in the movies, there is no accent.

Same way American actors can fake an accent... Mel Gibson in Braveheart for example.

I have the worst Australian accent impersonation in the world. British is pretty bad too. Hell, my English kinda sucks a little too. Maybe I'm just challenged.

gibson = aussie... but i get your point.

had no clue Capt. Winters from Band of Brothers was a brit. minnie driver was another one that surprised me, after grosse point blank was the first film of hers i saw.

The blonde chick in Without A Trace is an Aussie, but sometimes her accent comes through.

My question is why cast an Aussie in a TV show, when you can cast someone without an accent. In movies, I understand as Mel Gibson or others are the reason people go to see the movie.

I knew most of the Above were Not American.

But my Biggest Shock, was Hugh Laurie from the TV Show : HOUSE

Watched it for Years, never saw him on any Talk shows. Then whatever Year it was, he spoke on the Golden Globes.
I beleive he even made fun of the fact that he was British on the Globes.

they go to pronunciation lessons kinda heard that some of them had to do that to get rid of the accent just like in the movie pink panther (terrible movie) with steve martin the guy takes lessons to get rid of the french accent
