Naw, that whole 50+ for plasma is BS. I had a 52'' Sony plasma that had a worse picture than my fukkin Visio LCD from Costco.

this would pretty much be it: http://hdguru.com/first-pioneer-elite-kuro-pro-111fd-review/252/

highlight from review:

Black Level- This 9th generation Pioneer Elite plasma has the darkest blacks of any flat panel set I’ve seen. It is so dark, the intensity is too low to accurately measure with my current test gear. It’s noticeably darker than last year’s Pioneer and the Panasonic TH-50PZ850U. It’s not dead black (you’ll have to wait for next year’s Gen 10 model according to Pioneer), but it’s damn close. On the other end of the scale the calibrated brightness (using a 100 IRE window pattern) clocked in at 37.4 foot lamberts, providing an outstanding (observed) contrast ratio—advantage Pioneer

Consumer Reports has Samsung rated first. LG had great rankings too.

do agree that 'for the money' there are many options that probably beat out the pioneer.

Plasma - think P: Pioneer, Panasonic or Phillips

LCD - think S: Sharp, Sony, Samsung

Seymour, the SheBar sold electronics from 1999-2008 and here's a quick thumbnail

Plasma big screens often a better view for sporting events and movies with lots of motion or animation(action etc)

LCD a better overall picture for most other HD programming (TV series, non-action or animated movies)

Plasmas virtually impossible to repair when the teeny teeny gas bubbles break, as they will begin to do after a couple years. While one such break is virtually indiscernible, having multiples in same area creates mild fuzzy spots.

Plasmas physicall heavier and physically hotter when left on for extended period.

She favors Sony and Samsung for brands on either type, though there are several that can be reasonably given high grades.

I haven't seen a better picture yet than the Sony LCD. I wouldn't even consider a plasma. Their terrible at reflecting any kind of sunlight that hits the screen.

Kinda surprised to hear you didn't like the LG. I was just about to buy my first HD tv (right before a bunch of things went to hell and stopped me) and I had decided on a LG (37 inch). Was getting a great deal too. When looking at their 32 inch to 42 inchers next to the competition the LG looked better for less money, and rated highly too.

But 50 inch is a different ballgame I guess. Panasonic and Samsung are the way to go. And Plasma too for a 50 inch, or at least I would if I were you (and could afford it). Sony makes great sets too, but you'll pay more just for the name.
