Gambling charges have been dropped against the former owner of a now-shuttered Mundelein bar that was the subject of an undercover police investigation last year. The Lake County state's attorney's office dismissed the misdemeanor charge of keeping a gambling place against Nick Asiuras, former owner of the Fuel Bar & Grill.
The same charge also was dismissed against then-bar manager Nick Apostopoulos.
Late Friday, Assistant State's Attorney Lauren Walker confirmed the charges were dropped but did not elaborate.
Asiuras, of Addison, and Apostopoulos, of Bloomingdale, were among eight people arrested in March 2008 at the now-closed bar, 330 Townline Road. The arrests followed an investigation by the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group and local police.
A bartender, bouncer and a patron each sold drugs to undercover officers during the investigation, authorities said. Police also accused the bar of illegally running beanbag contests for money, which led to the gambling charges against Asiuras and Apostopoulos.
Several defendants eventually pleaded guilty to drug charges.
In April 2008, Asiuras surrendered the bar's liquor license and closed it rather than face a village hearing regarding gambling and drug charges.
The building remains vacant.
