WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A senior Democratic lawmaker said on Thursday he would push to pass legislation to repeal a three-year-old U.S. ban on Internet gambling that has hurt trade ties with European Union.
"I'm going to be pushing it," House of Representatives Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank told reporters at a press conference to lay out his agenda for reforming U.S. financial regulation.
Work on drafting the legislation should be completed this month, a House aide said.
Congress attempted in 2006 to quash online gambling in the United States by barring businesses from knowingly accepting payments in connection with unlawful Internet gambling, including payments made through credit cards, electronic fund transfers and checks.
European online companies lost billions in market value after the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act became law and they withdrew from the U.S. market.
Supporters of the ban, which was enacted when Republicans still controlled Congress and the White House, argued that offshore Internet gambling websites take billions of dollars out of the U.S. economy, damage families and serve as vehicles for money laundering.
Advocates of lifting the ban say it is impingement of personal liberty and estimate the United States could raise nearly $52 billion in revenue over the next decade by taxing and regulating Internet gambling instead.
Meanwhile, the London-based Remote Gambling Association has accused the U.S. Justice Department of singling out European online gambling companies like PartyGaming and 888.com for prosecution while allowing U.S. companies to operate freely.
The European Commission, acting on an industry petition, began a formal investigation into that issue last year and is expected to release a report soon saying it has grounds to take action at

Under the current economic times, believe there is a good possibility of the UIGEA of 2006 being repealed. JMO.

someone explain to me how removing UIGEA will boost the economy?

I'm all for it, but I need to hear what magic lifting this useless ban will do.

It will supposedly lessen the burden on the financial institutions but that is just the tip of the iceburg. It will lead to another bill which regulates and taxes online poker and possibly online casino's. I know the first bill, the one this thread is about, will help the sportsbooks. But I don't know if regulating poker and leaving sportsbooks out of the legal picture will help or hurt online sportsbooks. It seems to me that the second (yet to be announced, but sure to be announced) piece of legislation could lead to increased scrutiny of online sportsbooks and the witchhunt of sportsbook owners and industry supporters will continue as is, or the scrutiny could even get worse. Just my opinion.

Actually Frank may combine the two pieces of legislation mentioned above into 1 and go at it with one swing.

Frank brings this up regularly and it never goes anywhere. Maybe this time will be different, but it's doubtful.

New congress is mostly democratic so it has more of a chance now. Also with the rulings all over in different states (even SC) where judges are saying poker is a game of skill, its really gaining momentum.

The "right" direction would be to let the free market dictate the online gaming industry. However, our government is a pack of crooks and they wouldn't allow that. This is our best shot.

By "our" do you mean sports gamblers or poker players. Because the poker players have made it abundantly clear that they will throw sportsbettors under the bus in a second if it means something positive for them.

I am a sportsbettor. To me "us" is sportsbettors. However if they do legalize poker and I'm sure I"m getting a fair card shuffle and dealing then I may pick it back up again.

The impact all this will have on online sportsbetting is murky.

Easy. Play with sportsbooks that have poker.Transfer your sportsbetting winnings into your poker account at that book. And claim it as poker winnings when you collect.
They know this will happen too. They don't give a fuck.So long as they can tax you on it.The cocksuking politicians have made they're livelyhood avoiding rules and fair play.So long as you don't get cute and try to fuck them out of their money they'll leave you alone and agree that you are a great a "poker player."...its all bullshit.

The nfl and ncaa alone will not allow this...EVER...

Not sure this is true today like it has been in the past.
The aim of the government now is not the good of the people but the good of the govts money....When u have Soherto supporters dragging basketball coaches outside to tar and feather them and and soon rioting and burning any profitable buisness.....Well i just think soon it will be a free for all as we prepare to enter the "Lets be just like Somalia" phase of the Democrat destruction of the country...ANYTHING will be legal and taxed.....but alas...not for long..@)
