Ohio school gets 700 applicants for janitorial job

Associated Press

March 7, 2009, 9:40AM

MASSILON, Ohio — Evidence of the slumping economy is stacking up at an Ohio school which has nearly 700 applications for one open janitorial job.
Officials at Perry Local Schools near Canton in northeast Ohio say they’ve extended the deadline until Monday to accommodate the overwhelming response to the week-old posting.
The full-time position at Edison Junior High School pays $15 to $16 an hour plus benefits.
Superintendent John Richard says many applicants are laid-off workers with heart-wrenching stories about the tough economic times.
Forty-nine-year-old Donna Croston says she applied after losing jobs at two nearby factories that closed.
Croston says her chances of being hired amid the hundreds of applicants are slim, but she’s hoping to get lucky.

Who cares about benefits, you work a week then file a workmans comp claim, that will get u thru probably 14 months or so....Then when u go back you ask for 13 months off for maternity leave. When they question how a man could need this you file sex discrimination charges...By the time all this is done you have been with the company over 2 years...and worked a total of maybe 4 weeks but i digress. You now go in and quit the job, go home and file unemployment and your good to go for the next 2 years !!!!

You guys really seem to be lacking in good old American work ethics...

This is a decent job with good benefits.

A friend of mine was an editor of a small town newspaper. She had a degree in journalism. She printed the salaries of all the school employees as was law. She said she was making less than the school janitor.

Luckily she got a job at a bigger newspaper that pays more.

I think most here would grab this janitorial job in a flash if they were offered it.

No?

Pretty easy job for the most part too. No one really messes with you. I don't think in K-12 I ever saw the janitor even talk to anyone. Mop some floors put up the wet floor signs. Change some trash and stock the paper in the bathroom. And some misc other crap I guess.

I would take this over being a telemarketer or a fast food manager (both stressful with roughly same pay).

Not a tough job, by any means !

You have to put up with some shit from the kids. I recall some fatass janitor ( like 400 lbs) in middle school... named Richard Darling, kids used to bust on his name.

Decent job, a step below the USPS, but pretty decent...benies are the key element of it.

Way better than Wal'Mart !

It's a living wage job, with benies. Probably some security with it, as well.

I'm sure you don't bust ass doing it ! Not like a roofer installing shingles.

7,000 show up for 500 part time jobs at Dodger stadium

7,000 seekers for 500 jobs at Dodger stadium
March 2, 2009

LOS ANGELES (California) - THE FAMOUS Dodger Stadium saw a massive crowd over the weekend but they were there not for a baseball game but for jobs. Stadium management organised a two-day job fair to fill some 500 part-time jobs and saw almost 7,000 people turn up to apply for the positions.

Although many were fans, according to a CNN report released on Monday, most were more interested in the jobs than in any perceived perks to working at the stadium.

The jobs offered drew applicants from a wide variety of areas although they only pay from $9.50 to $17 an hour.

Experts have already said that people looking for summer jobs would have a tough time finding employment this year. In January unemployment in California rose to 10.1 per cent.

"We think the economy might reach bottom by this summer," said Nancy D. Sidhu, chief economist with the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation.

As a juvenile I was an alcoholic and always got caught with alcohol by the police. They didn't send me to jail, so I just accumulated community service hours. Over 600. So I became a full time non paid janitor at the middle school I had attended. I was 16 at the time. I've had around 15 jobs since then and the janitorial job was by far the hardest I've ever worked in my life.

Not only do you have to keep the school clean, every room, every crevice, every hall, you had to mow the lawn, cut the bushes, all the outside work too. It was pure hell.

To top it off, the janitorial supplies were kept underneath the building in a room that said WARNING ASBESTOS. So I expect to get mesotheliomia at any time.
