During the worst of times, humiltiy is something we don't often have to look for. Usually it's right there, reminding you every step of the way that you couldn't punch your way out of a wet paper sack. We find humility in our lack of confidence in finding a game, in the amount we bet, in the way we feel as soon as we've bet it.

Humility goes beyond how much you bet, how you pick your games, or any of the number of other things I've written about to this point. Humility is remembering that every bet can lose, or as Kenny Rogers once sang, "Every hand's a winner and every hand's a loser".

So how do we recognize our own humility? If you have to recognize it it's too late. Chances are you find yourself mired in the kind of mud you don't want to be mired in. Chances are your bankroll is going backwards while your bet amounts have increased. Chances are you find yourself becoming emotionally detached from what you're doing until it's too late and you have to start over, at which point you feel like you can start caring again.

Humility is doing well and remaining grounded in the reality that your next bet can lose just as easily as you expect it to win. Humility is remembering that you don't hold the secret formula to instant wealth. Humility is being satisfied with a win without proclaiming your genius to the world. Humility is knowing exactly what to do when that bad streak happens because it happens to everyone -- not to everyone except you.
