Postcard arrives in Ohio — 47 years late

Intended recipient died in 1988; official blames equipment for delay :drink:

HUDSON, Ohio - A woman's postcard bearing greetings from Montana has finally arrived in northeastern Ohio — 47 years later.
Insurance agent Dave Conn opened his post office box in the community of Hudson last week and found the mailing sent from Helena, Mont., in 1962.
It was sent to Marion White, the previous renter of the box, who had died in 1988. The writer signed the postcard "Fran" and mentioned having "had a marvelous time in Montana."

After asking around, Conn says he determined the card must have come from White's well-traveled friend Frances Murphey, a longtime reporter at the Akron Beacon Journal. She died in 1998 at age 75.
U.S. Postal Service spokesman Victor Dubina says the postcard may have been stuck in equipment or lost behind a mail chute.

Would it have been worse had the postcard been returned to sender after 47 years for postage due?

During the Blizzard of 2009 here in the South a few weeks ago, the Mail was still running. Schools and business's were closed, but the US Mail trucks pressed on through the snow and icy roads. Living up to their motto. My friends dad growing up was a Mailman. He went to bed every night at 7:30 so he could get up at 4:00 in the morning to be at the Post Office by 5:00 AM to start his route. He told me on time, if a person lives on the East Coast, say Charleston SC and mailed a letter to the West Coast say Portland Oregon, if the letter was mailed and postmarked by noon of that day, it should arrive at its destination the following business day in the afternoon delivery. That is going coast to coast in less than 36 hours. I had no reason to not believe him because he retired with Awards and Honors from the US Postal Service. I always enjoy talking with the postal workers I see during the week. Good Folk.

hAVE YOU SEEN THE PEOPLE AT THE POST OFFICE RECENTLY? I could never guess how the mail get to where it needs to get when it takes 2 hours to go in and buy one stamp. I seen smarter people at the local stop n go.

I guess this happens occasionally and the PO gets a lot of crap, but really it's pretty amazing what they can do for 42 cents. PO is underrated. That said, in this day and age the PO should be nearly not needed at all. No reason to send documents by mail unless you need an original signature. E-mail makes so much more sense.

They are losing money. Did you hear they are talking about cutting to 6 days a week and raising the price a bunch?

No need for the USPS anymore. I say get rid of them. Everyone has email, and all bank accounts have online banking, and everyone has a debit card. How much would this save a year for our dear country?
