PLANO, Texas - A police officer pulled over an NFL player rushing to see his dying mother-in-law, drew his gun, threatened the player with jail and held him in the hospital parking lot as she died, officials said Thursday.

Officer Robert Powell told his commanders he drew his gun but did not point it, Dallas police spokesman Lt. Andy Harvey said. That was disputed by the wife of Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats.

“He was pointing a gun at me as soon as I got out of the car,” Tamishia Moats told The Dallas Morning News, which first reported that Powell unholstered his sidearm.

The Moats family did not return messages left by The Associated Press.

Powell, who has been reassigned to desk duty, stopped Moats’ SUV outside Baylor Regional Medical Center during the early hours of March 18 after Moats rolled through a red light. Moats and his family had gotten a call saying his mother-in-law was dying.

Video from a dashboard camera inside the officer’s vehicle, obtained by Dallas-Fort Worth station WFAA-TV, revealed an intense exchange in which the officer threatened to jail Moats.

He ordered Tamishia Moats to get back in the SUV, but she ignored him and rushed inside the hospital to see her mother, Jonetta Collinsworth, 45, and was by her side when she died a short time later. She had breast cancer.

“Get in there,” said Powell, yelling at 27-year-old Tamishia Moats, as she exited the car. “Let me see your hands!”

“Excuse me, my mom is dying,” she said. “Do you understand?”

Ryan Moats, 26, explained that he waited until there was no traffic before proceeding through the red light. When Powell asked for proof of insurance, Moats grew more agitated and told the officer to go find it.

“My mother-in-law is dying! Right now! You’re wasting my time!” Moats yelled. “I don’t understand why you can’t understand that.”

As they argued, the officer got irritated. “Shut your mouth,” the officer said. “You can either settle down and cooperate or I can just take you to jail for running a red light.”

The officer later told Moats, "I can screw you over. I would rather not do that. You obviously will dictate everything that happens; and right now, your attitude sucks."

Powell also ignored the pleas of two nurses and a Plano police officer, all of whom tried to convince Powell to let Moats go into the hospital, WFAA said.

The exchange soon ended and Powell returned to his cruiser to write a ticket. A few minutes later, another officer approached Powell to tell him a nurse said the mother-in-law was dying right then and Moats needed to get into the hospital.

“All right. I’m almost done,” Powell said in response.

When Moats and Collinsworth’s father entered the hospital, they learned Collinsworth had died, The Dallas Morning News reported in Thursday’s editions.

The Moatses, who are black, said they can’t help but think that race might have played a part in how Powell, who is white, treated them.

“I think he should lose his job,” said Ryan Moats, a Dallas native.

"For him to not even be sympathetic at all, and basically we're dogs or something and we don't matter — it basically shocked me," Moats told WFAA.

The ticket issued to Moats was dismissed, Harvey said.

“There were some things that were said that were disturbing, to say the least,” he told the Dallas Morning News.

Powell told police officials he believed he was doing his job, said Dallas Police Assistant Chief Floyd Simpson.

what do you expect, police officers are the lowest of low. i have no respect for them and would never call them for help because they would just screw up the situation even more.

stupid, lack discipline and common sense. ego driven, feel like they have nobody to answer to.

2 sides to every story. I appreciate law enforcement. They have a tough job to do dealing with drug heads all day long to protect our families.

They protect you and yours indirectly everyday and you don't even know it.

This is one of the phrases of comparison that pisses me off the most. How can you assess value on someone elses pet? To some people their dog (or any other pet) is their family and they can love it more than they love a relative. Shows a lot of ignorance and lack of respect towards life. Yes I feel bad about what happened, but this comparison is so wrong.

I get that whale, but this is the story in question and there is video evidence.

I realize they protect me as well, but protecting me doesn't allow them to be on a power trip when my mother is dying in the hospital less than a few hundred feet away, whether it be out of bitterness or whatever the hell the chip on their shoulder is.

The chiefs apology was heart felt. Glad the cop was suspended, hopefully he doesn't come back. Chief said an officer like that has no place on his staff.

i dont want protection from them. i'll take care of it myself. i'm a grown man, i can defend myself. don't need to call 911 and wait for someone. if someone comes in, i only call 911 to get rid of the dead man in my house.

No common sense or apathy shown here...Cop was a dickhead and should be suspended for quite a long time...one cop makes hundreds look bad....really sad story, happens a lot in Dallas and it is not just blacks getting harassed...

MOATS should have held his hands high above his head and announced clearly that he was going into the hospital, then turned and started walking

Abusive cops can usually be sensibly ignored, especially if there's a score of witnesses on hand.

Even when his story was verified, this cop still felt the need to give the dude a lecture about attitude etc. What an absolute prick.

Seemed like the cop was not on the force long. Like he wanted to make an impression with his superiors, new cops try to do that to show they can do the job... A more seasoned cop would have handled things differently...

He should be fired because he has shown he does not have what it takes to be a good officer...

Hopefully enough people complain to their politicians and they put enough heat on the chief and he gets his ass fired... Possibly Moats can sue their ass off for a rights violation...

I'm going to play devil's advocate so feel free to bash away.

I certainly do not excuse the cop's language or tone he used in handling this situation at all. It was uncalled for and wrong.

Now, put yourself in his shoes for just one second. You see a car run a red light (not just a rolling yellow but a red light). You put on your lights and pull the car over. Two people immediately get out and look very panicked and loud and you have no idea what is happening.

You're trying to figure out the situation and aren't sure what's happening but you know for sure two people are not following your commands at all and are all over the place with their hands and moving about. You hear them screaming a family member is dying but you can't confirm this for sure and don't quite know what the hell is going on other than you just saw them run a red light.

I, for one, respect policemen very much and know they put their lives on the line daily for us. Cops have to be on the defensive constantly always awaiting for unexpected. These guys have heard every single excuse in the book to get out of traffic violations and while some are true and some not true they've heard them all. This guy had to figure out what happened because he didn't know. Were they just trying to get out of a ticket? Were they felons and trying to distract him long enough for a third person to get out of the car and shoot at him? Hell, these things go through a cop's mind I imagine. It's not safe and traffic stops can turn deadly.

What he should've done is try and calm the situation down and the only way to do that was to act calm and professional and assess what was happening. He could've walked right into the hospital with them and verifyed the story and after he did that just walk away but he didn't do that. Instead, he acted like an ass and that's what made it bad.

I don't think him stopping them and trying to figure out what happened was the problem but the way he handled the situation was the real tragedy here.

Just my .02 worth.

This post is terrible. Good luck to you when you really need them. Talk about generalizing an entire profession.
