it sure seems like across the board, purses are down at most tracks....i guess this is another sign of the bad economy right now, and the fact that even horse racing is not immune.....turfway park i noticed has very small purses, compared to just 3-4 years ago, and some other tracks like Aquaduct, Santa Anita and some others seem like the avg purse is down...of course they still have some handicap races or stakes races with decent purses, but the regular allowance races and claiming races sure seem to be less than just a couple years ago...

Its also quite evident that the tracks that have slots and casinos associated with them, are having better purses than the quality of horses warrant.....its gonna become necessary for the other tracks to do the same i think to compete..

I don't think it's just what's been going on lately. Handles have been down now for the past couple of years. But I guess it's not helping.

Santa Anita barely had a 5 million dollar handle the other day.. I remember a few years ago the handle would never be under 6.5 million..
