"Return to the Sacred" by Jonathan Ellerby is an amazing book! In March, 2008 I was feeling super stressed out, and super burned out, by the dual pressures of trying to be one of the greatest poker players in history, and dealing with the fame factor that drives so many celebs over the edge. I was starting to melt down and it was affecting my health (a little bit), and I couldn't figure out why. I mean, I had the poker records, the fortune, the fame, the wonderful wife, the great kids, the 12 million "Milwaukee's Best" beer cans coming with my picture and likeness, the NYT bestselling book ("Play Poker like the Pros"), one million subscribers on my "Phil Hellmuth's Texas Hold'em" cell phone game, a column in 40 newspapers, a piece of 18 different companies, I was on television every day, and I had much, much more. So what was the problem? Why do so many celebs with so much wealth and success melt down?

Well, first my wife convinced me to go to "Canyon Ranch" in Tuscon with her, which is the world's leading health spa, for one week. Then I called my friends at Taser and borrowed their jet for the ride down there. My wife and I joined the "Life enhancement" program, although I insisted on renting one of the best houses on campus. I thought, "If we were going to spend $18,000 for the week, then why not spend $30,000 and go in luxurious style?" Since I was starting to feel horrible around my chest and stomach (just for three or four days, thank god!), I ordered every test under the sun, and when my health scores came back "Perfect" (across the board, yes!), I knew that this physical unrest was all related to the mental side of the coin.

One day I attended a Jonathan Ellerby workshop, and he hit the spot! Ellerby broke down our lives, and I understood that I was living too much in my persona and not enough in myself. Yes, that tall guy dressed head to toe in black, with a black and gold PH hat on, with an IPOD that you see at the airport, and stare at, is the "Poker brat," but I am Phil Hellmuth as well. The "Poker brat" drinks Dom Perignon in the VIP section of the hottest clubs, hangs with the world's biggest celebs and beautiful women with security guards close by, still manages to stay loyal to his wife, and signs autographs and takes pictures with fans every single day.

The "Poker brat" wins major poker tournaments, whines about amateurs that outdraw him through poor play, mouths off on ESPN, plays high stakes poker at UltimateBet.com where he whines too much in the chat box, and says things like, "If it weren't for luck, I'd win em all!" But Phil Hellmuth jr. is a family man who likes to stay at home in Palo Alto with his wife and his two sons, write his books and columns at the coffee shop or in his study, do interviews over the phone, watch "Heroes," "Life," "Lost," "The Closer," and sports on TV, manage his "Poker brat" clothing company [PokerBrat.com] and "Phil's House" publishing company, and live in relative peace.

Ellerby taught me that when I stare at someone who is staring at me, that they notice it, even when I have sunglasses on, and that causes them to stop in their tracks. So now when I walk through an airport, I focus on the endpoint that I am walking towards, and then I don't notice all of the stares, comments, and people that stop dead in their tracks when they see me. Ellerby taught me that I was living too much in my "Poker brat" persona. Once he correctly diagnosed what I was going through, my health (which was only messed for a few scary days) came all the way back in a day or two. Of course, having 14 vials of blood drawn to have every test we could think of done, and then having it come back in near perfect scores was helpful. I did find out that I do need to eat less sugar and more fruit every day. Ellerby is basically a spiritual genius, and this book will help everyone that picks it up and reads it!

He's an idiot in just about every sense of the word.
He gets by more with putting players on tilt than with ability.

To be honest i think he's a dumbass but he may be on to something in this story....I was reflecting last week on my health probs. I eat decent, work harder in 3-4 hrs a day than most ppl do in a week and yet my health is declining at a very rapid pace..im literally aging years in weeks.
I was thinking that the reason has to be inside my head, im trying to be someone im not and the pressure to perform is killing me just like any other disease. Couple that with my constant battles with drugs and depression and it becomes easy to see y im a basketcase....
Self imposed pressure can kill you.....He's dead on correct on this read....Im buying that book today...

#1. I never said I was even close to being in the same league as
Hellmouth poker-wise. I clearly am not, and wouldn't claim to be.

#2. Actually I enjoy watching Phil on TV because you never know when
he's going to blow up or say something extremely stupid.

#3. Apparently you don't approve of my political views, that is your
prerogative. At least I didn't give a stranger the finger with an animated
gif for absolutely no reason (and call them a lurker, basher, nobody ??)
Wouldn't that make you what is called a hypocrite?

Have a nice day.

Priorities Phil, that is your problem; Put Jesus #1 and it falls into place after that;

that said one of the greatest belly laughs i have had in the last few years was watching when Phil and Annie Duke go head to head when Annie put Phil on complete tilt , won the winner take all then the camera followed Phil down the service hallway; @)

[h=1]Phil Hellmuth Wins Record 14th WSOP Bracelet After Capturing $10K Razz Title[/h]

[h=3]Related Articles[/h] Phil Hellmuth has done it. After being denied his 14th bracelet last year in a razz event, Hellmuth has found redemption in 2015 by taking down Event #17: $10,000 Razz Championship for $271,105. It marks the second non-hold'em bracelet for the Poker Hall of Famer.
"It's an amazing feeling, and it's one of those where I kept my head down the whole time and tried to stay kind of detached from the result," Hellmuth said after the win. "I was just focusing on playing great. Too often in the past when I'm down here I'm like, 'I need to win the bracelet.' I said you know what, I'm going to keep my head down, play great until it's over and then I can look up and celebrate, talk, and whatever. You've probably noticed this is the quietest heads-up I've ever had before."
Hellmuth defeated WSOP bracelet winner Mike Gorodinsky in heads-up play to capture the record piece of hardware.
"Mike is just really tough, and I needed all my concentration to give myself the best chance to beat him," Hellmuth commented. "He played phenomenal poker."

Hellmuth, who traditionally gives his bracelets to family and close friends, was also quick to point out that he would be giving his latest bracelet to a friend who had recently passed away.
"I'm donating this bracelet to Dave Goldberg," Hellmuth explained. "Goldberg, when he died a month ago, [President Barack] Obama said something about him. He was just an amazing human being. 1,700 people came to his restricted-access funeral. I played poker with him. He left way too early at age 47. I'm gonna give this to his wife and his kids."
Hellmuth, who believes he will win 24 bracelets in his career, is no stranger to razz. In fact, his first non-hold'em bracelet came in the variant back in 2012 when he took down Event #18: $2,500 Razz for $182,793, and then last year he finished runner-up to Ted Forrest in Event #7: $1,500 Razz despite holding a significant chip lead.
"I don't know what happened," Hellmuth reminisced. "I look back at that and I think that he was really, really lucky, but in my book, Play Poker Like the Pros, I say he's the best razz player in the world … I think the experience helped me. I changed my strategy just a little bit. I also think that I'm more clear minded this year than I've been in the past, it's really nice. I was just really calm, and of course whined too much."
This year, Event #17: $10,000 Razz Championship began with 103 players, which created a prize pool of $968,200, and at the start of the day 12 remained with the UK's Adam Owen leading the way. Hellmuth, meanwhile, was close behind with the third biggest stack.
Throughout the afternoon, Hellmuth showed just why he's one of the best razz players in the world, not by eliminating players — the only one he got before finishing off Gorodinsky was Shaun Deeb at the unofficial final table of nine – but by slowly and steadily amassing chips.
In one notable hand captured by the live updates, Mike Leah limped showing a

checked, and seventh was dealt facedown. Leah checked, Hellmuth bet 60,000, and Leah called only to muck when Hellmuth tabled

"I think I figured something out about razz in maybe 2012," said Hellmuth, who said he's skipping the $10K Omaha Hi/Lo Championship. "All of a sudden there was something about the game that just clicked. I was like wow, this game just makes sense, and then I won a razz bracelet."
Make that two.
Congratulations to Phil Hellmuth on capturing his record 14th World Series of Poker gold bracelet!
