MistaFlava's 2009 MLB Baseball Record: 0-0 (+0.00 Units)

So we are back for another baseball season and I could not be more excited. I did not post consistently in this sport in 2008 because I simply did not have the time but I have made the decision to post baseball picks right up until the NCAA Football season and NFL seasons come rolling back around and that should be a good 4-5 months of baseball and nothing but baseball.

I am also contemplating heading back into the world of NBA Betting but it's late in the season, I have not established myself in the pro hoops betting ranks and it would be tough to get into the swing of things right now at the end of the season and right before the playoffs. I am pretty sure I am not going to post NBA Picks but that might change and I might do the playoffs We'll see I guess.

The key to winning baseball bets early in the season is to stay focused on which teams and which pitchers are finding early season chemistry. Some teams favored to win it all might start 2-10 or they might start 10-0. Don't forget that good pitchers are good pitchers and bad pitchers bad pitchers regardless of Spring Training.

1 Unit = $100

I am a streaky capper and everyone knows it. You can tail, fade or simply watch what I do. But in the end, I am always a winner and that is all that matters.

Derek Lowe vs. Brett Myers

The Atlanta Braves are supposed to have some kind of bounce back season in 2009 but that is only as long as they stay healthy. I don't think the addition of guys like Derek Lowe are going to make the biggest difference in the world but I do see this team improving on how pathetic they were last season. Atlanta finished the year off very strongly against right handed pitchers last year and that was something they lacked all season long but the off-season probably took them out of that late season rythm and I am not willing to back them on the road (where they went 7-15 in their last 22 road games of 2008). I know they had a lot of success in this ball park in 2008 but that doesn't mean shit because the Phillies come in here with that extra swagger on their banner raising night. Derek Lowe had tons of success against the Phillies in his career with the Dodgers but this is a bit different here and I don't think he'll enjoy the same kind of offensive support he got with the boys in blue. You also need to know that betting on Atlanta as an underdog has not proven to be healthy as they are 10-21 in their last 31 games as an underdog and most of their success against right-handed pitchers came back at home and not on the road in 2008 so I don't see them improving much here as road underdogs. What I noticed about Atlanta is that they also struggled to set the tone in opening games last season going 0-4 in their last four Game 1 of a series and when you cannot win the opening game you cannot win consistently all season really. Derek Lowe was 2-1 in six spring starts with an ERA of 3.81 and a WHIP of 1.08 so as always you can expect him to be solid tonight but that doesn't mean the Phillies won't tag him for a few runs and those few runs I don't see Atlanta matching.

The Philadelphia Phillies are defending world champions and tonight is the night they raise the banner on National Television. In most sports you expect the defending champions to start the next season half asleep and that is normally the case but the Phillies have one heck of a powerful lineup that they only made better in the summer and I don't see them struggling at all at the beginning of this year. You could argue that this is not a good matchup for these guys but I like them in a low scoring game. One thing you have to learn about Philadelphia games is that unless the price is right and there is a very good reason to do it, going against them at home in this ballpark makes no sense whatsoever. They finished the season 21-5 in their last 26 home games and they also won 38 of their last 53 games in 2008. A lot of people are going to go against the opening night starter Brett Myers because of the way he got his ass kicked by Atlanta twice at home last season and for the fact that Philadelphia has not won against Atlanta in five straight games when Brett Myers is starting. Having said that, Myers had a solid spring training going 2-2 with a 3.52 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP which tells me he is ready to start the season. Raul Ibanez who was third in RBI's in the American League last year joins the team and he batted .310 in Spring Training. Again despite the problems Myers had at home against Atlanta last season, he did win 6 of his last 8 home starts (I should say the Phillies won those games) and you do not back this guy unless he is pitching at home. I think Myers can be solid enough tonight because the Braves offense is still not that solid and I think it's going to take them some time to get going. It won't happen on the road and it won't happen as underdogs so this is not a spot you want to go against Myers. He will be pumped up about being the Opening Night starter and as long as he can hold the Braves to only 2-3 runs in this game, the Phillies should kickoff the year with a win.

Believe it or not the road team won most of the times these teams met each other and that's not good for you Philadelphia backers like myself but again the Phillies have a different attitude this season. They are World Champions and they will carry that swagger into this game and well after their banner is raised on this night. I also think some late action is going to come in on Atlanta here because the Phillies are 0-5 the last five home games Brett Myers has started against the Braves and 0-4 in his last five starts overall against them but to me those stats don't mean much. Myers is a pitcher that can give you a good 5-6 innings and again I just don't trust this Atlanta offense no matter how well some of these guys hit in spring training. What I am looking at here is a solid Philadelphia lineup that is good for 3-4 runs against Derek Lowe (like they have always been) and maybe a few more off the bullpen but nothing all that special. No offensive explosions in this game. Brett Myers on the other hand is probably going to give up quite a few hits but he is good at getting out of jams and he is going to do enough to get himself out of trouble and keep the Braves to runners left on base and missed chances. I really like the Phillies on Opening Night and please keep in mind that Atlanta is 8-22 in their last 30 games against Philadelphia. Great price here.

Trend of the Game: Philadelphia is 21-5 in their last 26 home games.

Philadelphia 5, Atlanta 2

:toast:

Just one selection for tonight. Will have a full card of five games tomorrow for opening day and it should be a good one. I am going hard right off the bat in this game because I really like the defending champions on Opening Night. Good Luck to everyone here and have a great season!

Two things.

1. Glad to see you are posting bases.

2. Glad to see you are on the Phils, so am I. Anytime I take a team I always feel better knowing you like it also.

Good Luck this season!
