Florida +1.32 over ATLANTA
The Braves have started 5-1 and that’s impressive but it’s also pushed their stock up a little too high and they’ll be facing the pesky and very difficult to beat Marlins. The Fish can beat you in so many different ways, with speed, power, with stringing base hits together or with their deadly rotation and part of that great bunch of starters is Chris Volstad. Volstad is a ground ball pitcher that does not give up much at all. In fact, he allowed only three home runs in 14 starts with the Marlins and none in 15 starts at Double-A Carolina before that. Make note on anyone that rarely serves up bombs. Volstad was dazzling in his first start against a very tough Nationals batting line-up and he’s absolutely not taking a step up in class against this line-up. In fact, he didn’t allow a hit after the first inning. Javier Vazquez went six strong in Philadelphia and when anyone pitches well at Citizens Bank Park it’s an accomplishment. However, unlike Volstad, Vazquez is on the down slope of his career and he’s going to have plenty rough outings. His career ERA is close to 4.50 and that’s what you can expect from him on most nights. He’ll give up three, four or five runs in six or so innings and could easily get lit up by the very talented line-up of this guest. Marlins bullpen is shaky, thus the five inning wager. Cincinnati +1.25 over MILWAUKEE
Facing strikeout pitchers usually doesn’t work out well for the Brewers, as they’re collectively a team that’s never seen a pitch they didn’t like. Arroyo has posted strikeout totals of 184, 156 and 163 over the past three years and when he’s on he can fool a lot of hitters. Furthermore, the Brewers have opened the year 2-5 and just 1-4 against right-handed starters and have already struck out 65 times, which ranks second last in the majors. Arroyo arguably faced the best hitting line-up in the majors in the Mets in his first start and although he wasn’t at his best, he was still effective and picked up the win. The Brewers will be much more to his liking. Manny Parra was steamrolled like a cartoon character in his season debut against the weak offense of the Giants. He was pulled after allowing five runs in 4.1 innings and he’s never had success against the Reds. In fact, in two games against Cinci last season he allowed 15 earned runs in 16.1 frames. The Brewers bullpen is also a mess and all in all, I don’t see a single area that gives the Brewers an edge here. Play: Cincinnati +1.25 (Risking 2 units). <o></o>
