I hope someone here is smart with computers because I'm about ready to smash mine.

The problem is the internet wont work on my desktop, the high speed connection is connected to the internet and when you click IE a new window pops up and down in the status bar it says website found waiting for reply and then nothing the site never loads.

I also tried firefox same deal

By the way my laptop internet works fine thats a wireless connection.

Also this happened yesterday, when I got up both computers had restarted over night and the internet was'nt working on either of them so I shut them down and reset the modem I have to do that every now and then to get my laptop working and that got the internet connected on both of them but my desktop internet just wont work

Any ideas what the problem is

IE7 .. click tools / Internet Options / Connections Tab / Lan Settings

i was having problems with my desktop's internet repeatedly failing off and on... sheepishly i discovered the connection was at fault, the cable modem insert would somehow not be secure at times and would slip slightly causing a loss of reception.

hard to believe how many hours i poured over possible solutions when it was something so simple, bol with yours man.

What about trying release - renew?

Goto the run box from the start button...

In the command box, type ipconfig /release (enter)
Then type ipconfig /renew (enter)

This will reset the ip address for your windows machine.

if what OrionSky posted doesn't work then

try pinging the gateway

http://wiki.phoenixlabs.org/wiki/How_to_ping_a_website_or_an_IP_address?

(There are some screenshots on how to get the command prompt window and how to do a ping)

you can see what the gateway is by opening a command prompt and typing

ipconfig -all

it will list your current IP settings in the desktop

then ping the gateway (which will probably be something like 192.168.1.1 ) and see if it works

another thing that would be useful here would be an "IP stack reset"

sometimes windows xp "networking module" gets messed up

to do that open a command prompt (The black box from the link)

and type

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

and punch enter

For those interested, he was unable to do ping tests or release and renew his IP because the dos window (CMD) would not stay open for more than 1/2 a second. Google that symptom and you'll see why he had to do a full restore.

Couldn't do it in Safe Mode ? Fixing stuff in Safe mode has saved me a few times.
