Handful of people in the stands. Embarrassing...how do they keep a team there?

Pittsburg like many cities will support a team extremely well if it could somehow just compete for it's own division title. I read today that attendance is down almost 7% baseball wide this year but that is not why there is such a small crowd in Pittsburg tonight. The Marlins don't exactly packem in on the road where ever they play. Amazingly Boston played in front of it's 487th (or so) sellout today.

gotta figure the bad weather, and non divisional opp has a little to do with it...although like Wil said, until they put a decent team on field, they wont pack em in.....but in the stargell days they sure could...when they were good the crowds were good

NEW YORK (AP)—Major League Baseball’s average attendance was 30,298 for its first 183 games over the opening two weeks of the season, a 6.9 percent drop from last year’s final figure of 32,539.

The average declined from 31,111 in the opening week. The average usually drops during the second week of the season, as the significance of opening-day sellouts in the average lessens.

Attendance is usually weakest in April and September, when cold weather causes a drop for some teams in the Northeast and Midwest.
Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said last week he was pleased with opening-week attendance.

After 16 losing seasons it is painful for most to support the team, add to that the success of the penguins and the steelers possibly hurt interest especially with the pens in the playoffs right now. I hate fair weather fans but 16 years I mean c'mon.

Its a shame bc I don't know if any of you have ever been there or not but its a great fucking stadium.

The weather in pittsburgh was terrible tonight. Most people thought the game would be delayed or postponed, thats why nobody bothered showing up. Pirates are actually a pretty good team this year.

The people that continue to buy tickets are idiots. 18 straight losing seasons and mgmt shows zero commitment to trying to build a contender. The baseball fans in Pittsburgh like fireworks & bobbleheads.....truly a pathetic bunch. The loudest that stadium gets is when they race the pierogies in the 7th inning! When a walkout was staged to protest 16 losing seasons 2 years ago, the idiot fans booed the people who walked out in protest of all the losing!!!

The Pirates market all this horseshit too. They dont care about winning when they are making money. They got an amusement park going on down there with all of the sideshows. The advertising is all geared to families and kids and the owners continue to rake in the profit each year (that and what the Yankees sadly have to give them) of which none goes back into payroll.

projected attendance for mlb is down 7% right now...

i think it will end up being alot worse...

&

will become a big story as the season progresses...

i cannot recall the last time you could buy single game tix for cubs & cards...

beautiful sunday in new york...yankee stadium with tons of empty seats yesyerday...especially the club seats behind home plate...

to watch a ballgame and see the announcers turn into desperate ticket salesmen is sad...

the economy has finally caught up with the grand game.

i think this could be the year the pirates make a run at a winning season. i think they have some of the best starting pitching in the league. Maholm has come into his own, Duke is once again showing the promise that made him their prized prospect, and ian snell looks to be more like his ;07 form, then '08. now if they can get gonzo back to how he was throwing last year you have yourself a solid rotation. will be a little light with the bats again, but they have enough arms in the front and back (capps) of their staff to contend for a wildcard spot

it's embarrassing looking at those empty padded seats at yankee stadium. it's ridiculous that it has gotten to a point where a father has to think twice about bringing his son to a game b/c of the expenses. wasn't that what the game was built upon? disgrace that major league baseball has let it get this out of hand

Yep, maybe the arrogant moronic owners will stop paying $7million a year to pitchers who go 9-11 with a 5.12 ERA.

I dont mind the Pujols of the worlds making all that money but the problem lies with all the marginal to below average talent in the league making $3- $10 million a year.

Yes they do. It is too damn bad that MGMT didnt go out and sign 1-2 big name top notch free agents too.

The last few years these guys have been 2-3 guys away from competing in that shitty NL Central. Yet, nothing from mgmt.....

the clubs...especially the yankees...seemed to be shocked as corporations pulled out of season tix this year...
the owners are delusional...

they build brand new amusement park stadiums...on the taxpayer's dime...

&

then over price the onfield product to the point you made...

father's & sons cannot take in a ballgame...

nice to alienate your core fans like that.
