Washington +1.65 over NY METS (1st 5 innings)
Have no interest whatsoever of laying big juice with Mike Pelfrey against this very decent hitting guest. In fact, the Nats are 13th out of 30 teams with a .264 team batting average. Yeah, they’re winless on the road but they’ll eventually win some and this is as winnable a game on the road as they’ve had so far. They’ve faced a slew of strong starters on the road that include Derek Lowe, Ricky Nolasco, Josh Johnson, Chris Volstad, Jair Jurrjens and Johan Santana but will find Mike Pelfrey much more to their liking. Pelfrey is having trouble finding the strike zone and he also suffered from tendonitis in his right forearm and missed his last start. In two starts covering just 10 frames, Pelfrey has been tagged for three bombs and nine earned runs for an ERA of 8.10. He’s walked six and struck out five. Daniel Cabrera hasn’t been much better but one thing I can tell you for sure is that Cabrera has filthy stuff and when his head is screwed on right he can be as good as any pitcher in the game. In 16 innings he’s only allowed 16 hits and one jack and his ERA of 4.50 is respectable but he can be much better than that. With a big take-back here the Nats are definitely worthy of some consideration, as Pelfrey has showed absolutely nothing this year and the tag offers up some strong value. Big bullpen advantage to the Mets, thus the five-inning bet. Play: Washington +1.65 in the first innings (Risking 2 units). <o:p></o:p>

FLORIDA -½ -1.01 over Philadelphia (1st 5 innings)
This appears to be one of the biggest pitching mismatches on the board today. In two starts Chan Ho Park has a WHIP of 2.04. Anything over 1.50 is big trouble, 2.04 is a complete disaster waiting to happen. The opposition is hitting .366 off him and the talk is of him losing his starting job as the team’s fifth starter. Ya think? Park has been a stiff for a few years now and really hasn’t had success as a starter since about 2001, as his ERA figures since than have been 5.75, 7.58, 5.46, 5.66, 5.91, 5.74, etc. In ’07 he pitched one game all year and last season he had moderate success as a reliever for the Dodgers but Chavez Ravine can make anyone look good. Meanwhile, Chris Volstad is one of the brightest young pitchers in the game. He’s keeps the ball down and induces ground ball after ground ball. The opposition has gone yard on him just once this year and last year he allowed just three jacks in 14 starts. That bodes well here against a Phillies team that relies on the long ball. Volstad is also 2-0 with a 2.76 ERA. Play: Florida in the first five innings -½ -1.01 (Risking 2.12 units to win 2). <o:p></o:p>
