Online gambling coming back to the US? - NY Times

NY Times reports executives of some of the European companies whisper excitedly that they may soon get a second chance with online gambling in the United States. Meanwhile, a number of European countries that have long maintained barriers are moving, under pressure from regulators, to legalize, and tax, online gambling. "There's still a lot of gambling going on, where there's no revenue coming in to the governments," said Gavin Kelleher, an analyst at the research firm H2 Gambling Capital in Ireland. "They realize they could use the revenue." The biggest potential change would be in the United States, where, perhaps within days, Representative Barney Frank, Democrat of Massachusetts, is expected to introduce legislation aimed at overturning the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. "He supports the repeal and wants to move forward on it," said Steve Adamske, communications director for the House Financial Services Committee, of which Mr. Frank is chairman. Mr. Frank tried and failed to do so once before, in 2007. But advocates of liberalization think they might get a friendlier hearing in Washington this time around. President Barack Obama, they note, boasted of his poker prowess during the election campaign. And the Democrats, who are seen as less hostile to Internet gambling than the Republicans, have tightened their grip on Congress.

Of course they are all wrong. These euro companies are saying this to get their stock price up not because of piece of evidence what they are predicting will happen. Euro removing barriers??????? How about Norways complete ban of ANY internet gambling??
And the U.S. needing revenues as a reason to loosen up?? NO WAY......They ( communist led Democrats) dont believe that revenue (cash) comes from taxpayers. No the money is theirs already its only a matter of how they will allow you to spend the crumbs they drop........If they need more money they let you have less of it they dont take more from you...

Actually legalizing poker and casino games on the internet would kill our economy!

All of the money would be going overseas and you just imagine how many bankrupt senior citizens we would have who are playing online casino games

Frank Internet Gambling Bill Pushed Back

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Representative Barney Frank has sworn to introduce a bill repealing the UIGEA and regulating online gambling this spring. But apparently a second deadline to produce the Internet gaming measure will pass, as Frank's Financial Services Committee continues to be occupied with laws directly relating to the economic crisis.

Frank had offered the opinion he would be presenting the new proposed gaming rules by the end of March. When that failed to happen, he said the bill would be before Congress between Easter break and the end of April.

But only three days remain in April, and no sign of the Internet gambling bill is at hand. Sources report that further emergency measures relating to the recession have once again taken center stage, putting the online gaming bill behind more pressing concerns.

Predatory credit card company policies have become a major issue for President Obama. With companies jacking up customer rates even as their own interest rates drop, lawmakers are looking at ways to narrow the gap, and perhaps advance the activation of a law set for 2010 regulating credit companies.

“There’s a better chance now for some sort of gaming legislation to be approved. But it took longer than expected to put anti-gaming legislation in place, and it will probably will take longer than expected to remove it,” a casino market analyst told the New York Times.

Capitol Hill insiders say the bill will probably come forward in the next few weeks. Speculation is that resolution and new gaming laws might be in place by the end of 2009.
