Carl Crawford tied a modern Major League record by stealing six bases against the Red Sox on Sunday.

Crawford was 4-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored. Four of his steals came off the Brad Penny-Jason Varitek battery, with the other two coming off relief pitchers. Only Otis Nixon, Eric Young, and Eddie Collins had stolen six bases in a game in the modern ern. Crawford now leads the majors with a whopping 17 steals.

It was made possible primarily because BJ Upton absolutely sucks right now. Because of Upton's continued ineptness, whenever Crawford got on base, 2nd (and 3rd) were always unoccupied.

Sox paid how much for Varitek to get run on all day and night and bat .220?

At the moment Varitek is actually right on par with the league average in batting average and he's actually above the league average in homeruns and RBI's...so if you want to jump to conclusions after the first 25 games of the season, then I guess the Red Sox got a pretty good deal for about $5 million this year.

The league average is not .239 which is Varitek's current batting average.

Defensivley Varitek has allowed 26 stolen bases, the most by a wide margin in the majors, not other catcher has allowed 20, has thown out a piss poor seven for a pct of .212
His zone rating and range factor are ordinary at best.

5 million for Bobby Abreu is a good deal.
5 million for a rapidly declining catcher that hit .220 for a full season is not.
