he Phillies visit the Mets' new home, CitiField, for the first time on Wednesday, and leave it to those Metropolitans to ensure they've lined up their ace for the contest, slotting Johan Santana into this marquee matchup against … Chan Ho Park?! C'mon, Phillies, you couldn't have aligned the rotation better? Still, the "Johan Jinx" of 2008 will be front and center in this NL East rivalry rematch, assuming, of course, the weather cooperates. In other news, Kevin Slowey, in spite of his 5.17 ERA, will attempt to win a fifth consecutive decision to begin the season in a trip to Camden Yards; the Rays will make their first visit to the Yankees' new home, new Yankee Stadium, but face a guy who shut them down in Tampa Bay a few weeks back, A.J. Burnett; and Clayton Kershaw, who shut out the Padres for seven innings in his most recent start, will get a comparably favorable matchup to build upon when he and the Dodgers host the Nationals.
For starters

Selected notes: Though Johan Santana managed a quality start in each of his five starts against the Phillies in 2008, he won but twice, his games against his chief division rival as representative as any from a year ago of the impact of poor run and bullpen support on his record. Still, I play for ERA, WHIP and strikeouts, and none of those games showed even a hint of concern in those categories. … In defeating the Rays on April 14, A.J. Burnett went eight innings allowing only two runs on three hits and a walk, and striking out nine. He also presented problems for the defending American League champs last year, managing a 3.15 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 11.7 strikeouts-per-nine innings ratio in three starts. … Jake Peavy has a mediocre track record against Arizona -- by his standards -- going 11-11 with a 4.80 ERA in his career. Breaking those numbers down since 2006, he's 5-5 with a 4.11 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 12 starts, good enough to use in most formats but not exactly the elite-caliber numbers we've come to expect from him over the years. … Armando Galarraga already managed a quality-start performance against the White Sox on April 15 (6 1/3 IP, 4 H, 0 ERs), and he's off to a hot enough start that he should be kept active regardless of a tough ballpark assignment. … No need for Coors Field fear with Randy Johnson, as he's 7-4 with a 3.50 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 12 career starts there. That includes back-to-back victories in his past two starts at Coors, one apiece in 2007 and 2008, during which he combined to throw 12 innings, struck out 16 hitters and allowed two runs on six hits. … Call me crazy but I'm almost more intrigued by Jon Garland's matchup in that Diamondbacks-Padres game than I am his opponent Peavy. It makes sense; he's a fly ball pitcher and the venue is spacious Petco Park against a sluggish offense. Again, I stress the word almost, but that means I'm giving Garland the go-ahead. … Bronson Arroyo has already defeated the Brewers once this season, on April 14, and since 2006 he's 6-4 with a 3.39 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 11 starts against them. Great American Ball Park has never bothered him all that much, so feel free to activate him. … Zach Duke actually defeated the Cardinals on April 8 (6 1/3 IP, 5 H, 1 ER), and has a 3.97 ERA in 10 career starts against them. It's not an elite matchup but NL-only owners can't be called crazy for leaving him in on Wednesday. … Though Mark Buehrle is 13-8 with a 2.98 ERA in his career against Detroit, let's break those numbers down to just since 2006: He's 2-3 with a 3.99 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in eight starts. We all know about the Tigers' penchant for crushing left-handers -- through Monday their team OPS against that side was 113 points higher than versus right-handers -- so don't be so convinced Buehrle will dominate as his past numbers suggest. … Ubaldo Jimenez might be a scary pitcher to use right now, but if you're in a deeper league, he's worth thinking about based on his track record both at Coors and against the Giants. His lifetime ERA at Coors is more than a run lower than it is on the road (3.70 to 4.84), and he has a 2.65 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in six career starts against San Francisco.
Now batting
Hitters' count
• Derek Jeter, SS, Yankees: He's 6-for-15 (.400 BA) with a double, a triple and three RBIs in his career against Andy Sonnanstine, striking out just twice.
• Hideki Matsui, OF, Yankees: He has belted two home runs and added a double in 10 career at-bats versus Sonnanstine, for a .300 batting average.
• Carl Crawford, OF, Rays: Not only is he 14-for-39 (.359 BA) lifetime versus A.J. Burnett, he has stolen 10 bases on 11 attempts in his career against the right-hander, the one failed attempt on a pickoff play. Granted, all of those successful steals came in 2007 or earlier, but Crawford is running well thus far, much closer to his pre-2008 performance besides.
• David Ortiz, DH, Red Sox: Start salivating, "Big Papi" owners, as despite its small sample size, his 3-for-5, one-double, one-homer performance in his career versus Carl Pavano is sure promising. So are the facts that it's a home game, and against a right-hander with an OPS almost 100 points higher versus lefties for his career.
• J.D. Drew, OF, Red Sox: He's 5-for-8 (.625 BA) lifetime versus Pavano, and ditto the points with Ortiz. In fact, you should load up on Red Sox on Wednesday.
• David Wright, 3B, Mets: He's 4-for-7 with two doubles in his career against Chan Ho Park, including 2-for-2 with a double and a walk in their May 1 meeting.
• Ryan Howard, 1B, Phillies: Johan Santana doesn't scare him in the slightest; he's 6-for-14 (.429 BA) with two home runs in his career against the left-hander.
• Raul Ibanez, OF, Phillies: Like Howard, Ibanez is a left-hander with success against southpaw Santana, going 12-for-34 (.353 BA) with one home run in his career.
• Hanley Ramirez, SS, Marlins: He's 9-for-17 (.529 BA) with five doubles and three walks in his career against Derek Lowe.
• Jorge Cantu, 1B/3B, Marlins: He's 4-for-5 with two doubles lifetime versus Lowe.
• Mark Teahen, OF/3B, Royals: The Royals as a whole hit Carlos Silva well -- their active hitters have combined to bat .316 against him in their careers -- but Teahen is one of their biggest standouts, going 8-for-23 (.348 BA).
• Ichiro Suzuki, OF, Mariners: He's 10-for-21 (.476 BA) with one double, one triple and two walks in his career against Sidney Ponson.
• Magglio Ordonez, OF, Tigers: In one of Wednesday's most favorable matchups, Ordonez takes his lifetime .536 batting average (15-for-28), two doubles and two home runs in his career up against familiar foe Mark Buehrle.
• Placido Polanco, 2B, Tigers: He's not bad against Buehrle, either, going 12-for-29 (.414 BA) in his career against the left-hander.
• Jack Cust, OF, Athletics: Not only is he 4-for-11 (.364 BA) with two home runs in his career against Scott Feldman, he's not much of a worry in a home game either, seeing as he has a .954 career OPS at McAfee Coliseum.
Pitchers' count
• Evan Longoria, 3B, Rays: One of the few pitchers who has dominated Longoria historically is A.J. Burnett; the Yankees right-hander has limited the defending rookie of the year to two singles in 13 at-bats, striking him out seven times.
• Carlos Pena, 1B, Rays: He also has problems with Burnett, striking out nine times in 22 at-bats and managing only two singles and a home run (.136 BA).
• B.J. Upton, OF, Rays: Ditto the previous two, only he has 10 K's in 18 career at-bats against Burnett. No wonder Burnett's best start of 2009 came against Tampa Bay!
• Brandon Phillips, 2B, Reds: Amazingly he's hitless in nine career at-bats versus Manny Parra, and coupled with his slow start it gives you something to think about.
• Rickie Weeks, 2B, Brewers: He's a mind-numbingly bad hitter in his career against Bronson Arroyo, going 1-for-20 with 10 strikeouts against the right-hander.
• Bill Hall, 3B, Brewers: Banged up and comparably bad against Arroyo, having gone 3-for-19 with 12 K's lifetime against the Reds starter. Hey, at least he hit one homer.
• Jimmy Rollins, SS, Phillies: He's off to an atrocious start and is 1-for-17 (.059 BA) in his career against Mets ace Johan Santana.
• Pedro Feliz, 3B, Phillies: No way he should be in anyone's lineup, considering Santana has limited him to a 3-for-19, six-strikeout career performance.
• Miguel Tejada, SS, Astros: He's hitless in six career at-bats versus Rich Harden.
• Adrian Beltre, 3B, Mariners: Off to a sluggish start, Beltre is also 1-for-13 (.077 BA) in his career against Sidney Ponson.
• Brad Hawpe, OF, Rockies: Randy Johnson has owned him to the tune of nine hitless at-bats with four strikeouts in their careers.
• Bobby Abreu, OF, Angels: Back when they were AL East rivals, Abreu went 4-for-22 (.182 BA) with 10 strikeouts and no extra-base hits versus Roy Halladay in 2007-08.
• Torii Hunter, OF, Angels: He has been similarly frustrated by Halladay historically, going 3-for-28 (.107 BA) in his career against the former Cy Young winner.
• Juan Rivera, OF, Angels: He's hitless in 13 career at-bats against Halladay.
• Chris Young, OF, Diamondbacks: Just 1-for-25 on the road this season through Monday, Young now heads to Petco Park to battle Jake Peavy, against whom he's 4-for-21 (.190 BA) with eight strikeouts in his career.
• Chad Tracy, 1B, Diamondbacks: The Diamondbacks shouldn't even bother using him on Wednesday, as he's 8-for-44 (.182 BA) with 15 K's lifetime versus Peavy.

If you're hardcore
• Jerry Hairston Jr., SS/OF, Reds: The Reds are almost guaranteed to play him every day with Edwin Encarnacion on the DL and Alex Gonzalez probably headed there, and Hairston is 3-for-6 with two home runs in his career against Manny Parra.
• Craig Counsell, 3B/SS, Brewers: His 7-for-21 (.333 BA), four-walk career performance against Bronson Arroyo, coupled with Bill Hall's poor track record and health questions, make him a decent bet to crack the Milwaukee lineup. Another point in his favor: Counsell started the last time the Brewers faced Arroyo on April 14, albeit at shortstop.
• Fernando Tatis, OF, Mets: He got the start against Chan Ho Park on May 1, granted in place of a nicked-up Carlos Delgado, but went 2-for-2 with a double and an intentional walk against the right-hander to bring his lifetime batting average versus Park to .583 (7-for-12, plus two home runs). Expect him to get a start at one of the corner outfield spots.
• Geoff Blum, 3B, Astros: He's 3-for-7 in his career against Rich Harden, and of those hits, one was a double and one was a home run.
• Mike Sweeney, DH, Mariners: Though many of the numbers were accrued several seasons ago, it's still tough to overlook that he's 13-for-25 (.520 BA) with three home runs and two walks in his career against Sidney Ponson.
• Yorvit Torrealba, C, Rockies: Ubaldo Jimenez doesn't exactly have a personal catcher, so the Rockies might see Torrealba's 6-for-19 (.316 BA) career performance against Randy Johnson and grant him a token start.
• Jody Gerut, OF, Padres: You need to pick and choose your matchups with him, but this is a favorable one, as he's 6-for-19 (.316 BA) with three doubles and one home run in his career against Jon Garland.
Triage
Injury list: Out
• Jorge Posada, C, Yankees (hamstring): Placed on the DL with a hamstring injury
• Rick Ankiel, OF, Cardinals (head): Likely to miss a few days and might require a DL stint after crashing into the wall headfirst on Monday
• Doug Brocail, RP, Astros (15-day DL, hamstring)
• Matt Capps, RP, Pirates (elbow): Likely out until the weekend • Alex Gonzalez, SS, Reds (oblique): Likely headed for the DL
• Tom Gordon, RP, Diamondbacks (15-day DL, hamstring)
• Carlos Guillen, 1B/3B/OF, Tigers (shoulder)
• Josh Hamilton, OF, Rangers (15-day DL, ribs)
• Brandon Morrow, RP, Mariners (15-day DL, shoulder)

Injury list: Day-to-day
• Joe Beimel, RP, Nationals (hip): Active and ready to assume the closer role
• Jacoby Ellsbury, OF, Red Sox (hamstring)
• Khalil Greene, SS, Cardinals (arm): Played defense on Tuesday and should start on Wednesday
• Ken Griffey Jr., OF, Mariners (illness)
• Gabe Gross, OF, Rays (personal): Was expected back Tuesday
• Bill Hall, 3B, Brewers (hamstring): Expected back Wednesday
• Felipe Lopez, 2B, Diamondbacks (ankle)
• Chase Utley, 2B, Phillies (foot)
• Kevin Youkilis, 1B/3B, Red Sox (side)
Weather concerns
• Only one game Wednesday is weatherproof: Cubs-Astros.
• Rain continues to batter the East Coast, especially in the cities of Baltimore, Boston and New York, where the chance of precipitation is 70 percent across the board. With both the Mets and Yankees at home Wednesday and Thursday, that means four games threatened by rain: Twins-Orioles, Rays-Yankees, Phillies-Mets and Indians-Red Sox. One bright spot: All of those cities' forecasts call for the worst weather to come after midnight, and the chance of precipitation in each city during the day is no greater than 50 percent. Like on Monday, there's a possibility all four games might yet be squeezed in.
• The next-most jeopardized games by the weather are the ones in Cincinnati (Brewers-Reds) and Chicago (Tigers-White Sox), with the latter dealing with a 60 percent chance of rain all day. Wind will also be an issue in Chicago; winds of 10-15 mph are expected. In Cincinnati a 50 percent chance of rain drops to 20 at night.
• Wind might be a factor in Colorado (Giants-Rockies faces 6-14 mph winds gusting to 20) and San Diego (Diamondbacks-Padres might battle 10-15 mph winds gusting to 20).

Great time to get Slowey
From ESPN.com's Tristan H. Cockcroft: "Slowey's BABIP numbers very much support his case as a big-time buy-low candidate. Both his .357 BABIP on ground balls and .833 BABIP on line drives were noticeably higher than the league averages, he had a 9.5-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and his home run/fly ball percentage (8.9) is well within range of his 2008 number (9.3). I called him a top-25 starting pitcher candidate in the preseason, and I stand behind that statement today."

Sonnanstine picked up the win on Friday night, giving up two runs over 5.2 innings.
While he got the win, it wasn't exactly an encouraging outing. Sonnanstine walked four and gave up eight hits, indicative of a less-than-stellar performance. He allowed at least two base runners in four of the first five innings and got a double play in the other inning. He's going to need to step it up quickly to maintain his spot in the rotation.

Silva couldn't make it through the fourth inning Friday, giving up six runs, six hits and four walks in 3.2 innings. He struck out three.
Silva has lasted more than five innings just once this season, and this is the second time in five starts he's given up six runs. There was no word whether the stiff shoulder he experienced in his last start factored into this one. More likely, it was just vintage Silva -- too many balls up in the zone.

Galarraga limited the Royals to one run over six innings while striking out seven and walking five in a 3-2 win on Sunday.
He improved to 3-0 with an 1.85 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 24.1 innings. Galarraga is proving that last year's steady rookie campaign wasn't a fluke

From ESPN.com's Tristan H. Cockcroft: "Though Buehrle is 13-8 with a 2.98 ERA in his career against the Tigers (whom he faces Wednesday), let's break those numbers down to just since 2006: He's 2-3 with a 3.99 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in eight starts. We all know about the Tigers' penchant for crushing left-handers -- through Monday their team OPS against that side was 113 points higher than versus right-handers -- so don't be so convinced Buehrle will dominate as his past numbers suggest.'

Halladay gave up four runs (three earned) in eight innings to get the win over the Orioles on Friday night. He struck out six and walked one.
Halladay improved to 19-4 over his lifetime against the O's. He's beaten them more than any other team so far in his career.

Manager Charlie Manual confirmed Saturday that Park will make his next scheduled start, the Phillies' official site reports.
"Yeah, more than likely, he's going to make his next start," Manuel said Saturday. Still not a ringing endorsement from Manuel. Park is likely one more poor start away from being sent to the pen. That could create an opportunity for J.A. Happ or Carlos Carrasco.

From ESPN.com's James Quintong: "At least Santana has a winning record given his ridiculous stats this year, but the Mets have provided him only nine runs of support in his five starts so far. He's done his best to overcome it, though, although his two non-wins came in a couple of fluky situations. His best outing of the year (7 IP, 13 K) resulted in a 2-1 loss to the Marlins thanks to a Daniel Murphy error that led to two unearned runs. And he was set for another win before J.J. Putz blew an eighth-inning lead to the Marlins in his most recent start."

Parra gave up one run over six innings with eight strikeouts and four walks, but got a no-decision in Friday's loss to Arizona.
After a slow start, Parra may finally be getting in a groove as he's allowed just two runs in his last two starts (11 innings). He's still waked at least three batters in each of his last four starts, however.

Arroyo threw eight shutout innings against the Pirates on Friday to get the win.
Arroyo gave up hits to the first two batters of the game and loaded the bases in the first inning, but got out of that jam. He then retired 10 in a row and 16 of 17 overall.

Harden gave up five runs on six hits and four walks in 3.2 innings Friday, while striking out two. He also forced home a run by hitting Jorge Cantu with the bases loaded, the Cubs' web site reports. "Usually I can work through stuff like that," Harden said. "I didn't have an idea where the ball was going today. It's not good."
Harden hasn't complained of any arm problems, so we wouldn't be overly concerned just yet, but you have to wonder how his command could be that off.

Duke was a hard-luck loser on Friday night, giving up just one run over seven innings, only to see the Pirates get shut out by Bronson Arroyo.
After a good start offensively, the Pirates have been held scoreless in their last 22 innings. Duke allowed six hits and two walks while striking out five, lowering his ERA to 2.21 in the process.

Although he did not factor into the decision, Boggs struck out nine in six innings Thursday.
In 13.2 innings this year, Boggs has a sparkling 15:4 K:BB ratio and 3.29 ERA. He's starting to become relevant, and with the way Todd Wellemeyer is pitching, Boggs could stick in the rotation even when Chris Carpenter returns.

Johnson was fantastic Friday, holding the Rockies scoreless over seven innings during the Giants' 3-2 win.
Johnson allowed just four hits, struck out nine and walked none, lowering his season ERA to 4.50 in the process. He's had a couple of shaky outings this year, but with 30 strikeouts over 26 innings, Johnson has shown he's capable of remaining a highly effective pitcher even at age 45.

From ESPN.com's Tristan H. Cockcroft: "Jimenez might be a scary pitcher to use right now, but if you're in a deeper league, he's worth thinking about based on his track record both at Coors and against the Giants. His lifetime ERA at Coors is more than a run lower than it is on the road (3.70 to 4.84), and he has a 2.65 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in six career starts against San Francisco."

From ESPN.com's Tristan H. Cockcroft: "Call me crazy, but I'm almost more intrigued by Garland's matchup in that Diamondbacks-Padres game Wednesday than I am his opponent Peavy. It makes sense; he's a fly ball pitcher and the venue is spacious Petco Park against a sluggish offense. Again, I stress the word almost, but that means I'm giving Garland the go-ahead."

Peavy threw eight scoreless innings on Friday night but got a no-decision with the Padres getting shut out.
After his last rough start, seeing him as dominant as he was has to be somewhat comforting. Peavy struck out eight and only gave up two hits and a walk.

Disregard the overall numbers
From ESPN.com's James Quintong: "Kershaw's overall numbers don't look all that appealing, but that's because of those two awful outings in which he allowed 15 runs in nine innings. However, in his other three starts (including a 13-K gem against the Giants on April 15), he's allowed just two earned runs total and been saddled with three no-decisions. In those games, he's gotten just three runs of support, and the bullpen has blown two leads for him as well. There might be some consistency issues all year long, but Kershaw could be a buy-low guy given some of his bad luck."

Lowe is 5-4 with a 4.46 ERA in 15 games - 10 starts - against the Marlins, including 1-3 with a 4.40 ERA in seven games with five starts coming at Dolphin Stadium. Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez is 9-for-17 (.529) with five doubles and three walks in his career against Lowe, and second baseman Dan Uggla is 6-for-18 with a homer and a double off him.

In his last outing, Lowe held Houston to two runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 7-2 victory on Friday. It was the fourth time in six starts since signing a four-year, $60 million contract with Atlanta in the offseason that he's given up two runs or fewer.

Cincinnati has outscored opponents 27-11 and posted a 1.41 ERA while winning four of its last six contests - all the victories coming by shutout.
Arroyo, who gave up four hits in eight innings of Cincinnati's 4-0 win at Pittsburgh on Friday, is 8-4 with a 3.40 ERA in 14 starts against the Brewers.

Manny Parra (0-4, 5.33) the left-hander allowed three runs and walked four in six innings of the April 14 loss. He's 0-2 with a 6.38 ERA in three starts against the Reds.

Santana went 2-0 with a 2.97 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 36 1-3 innings over five starts against the Phillies in 2008.
The Phillies will give the ball to Chan Ho Park (0-1, 8.57), who allowed seven runs and eight hits with six walks in 4 2-3 innings of a 7-4 loss to the Mets on Friday.

With the Cubs playing a day game after a night game, manager Lou Piniella opted to rest two players who had started every game - left fielder Alfonso Soriano and shortstop Ryan Theriot - as well as right fielder Milton Bradley, catcher Geovany Soto and third baseman Aramis Ramirez.
Most of those players are expected to return to the lineup Wednesday

It would probably be bad news for Houston if Soriano and Ramirez are back. Soriano went 5-for-15 with two solo homers in the season-opening series at Minute Maid Park while Ramirez was 6-for-14 with five RBIs.

The Astros are hoping Mike Hampton (1-2, 4.88 ERA) can give their overworked bullpen a rest. Their starters have failed to pitch past the fifth inning in five straight games, posting a 5.31 ERA with relievers putting up a 5.63 ERA over the last 24 innings

Hampton is 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA in his last three outings. He lost Friday at Atlanta by giving up six runs over 4 1-3 innings in a 7-2 loss

Chicago's Rich Harden (2-1, 5.11) will return to the mound after a subpar outing. He gave up a season-high five runs over 3 2-3 innings Friday in an 8-6 home win over Florida.
Harden struck out two after recording 35 in his first four starts

With each club trying to avoid a fourth consecutive loss, the Cardinals and Pirates begin a two-game series Wednesday night at Busch Stadium.
The Cardinals are one of the highest-scoring teams in the majors with 148 runs and boast one of the best pitching staffs with a 3.90 ERA, but they've been outscored 22-9 during their skid.

Peavy (2-3, 4.58 ERA) allowed two hits in eight innings and struck out eight Friday, but San Diego mustered only four hits in a 1-0 defeat at Los Angeles.
Peavy is 1-3 with a 3.83 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 42 1-3 innings in his last six home starts. He's received more than two runs of support in only one of those outings - a 6-3 win over San Francisco on April 11.
Peavy is 6-2 with a 3.12 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 66 1-3 innings over his last 10 starts against the Diamondbacks at Petco Park.
Arizona is last in the majors with a .226 average and its 99 runs rank ahead of only San Francisco's 90.
Jon Garland (2-1, 4.94) is well aware of the Diamondbacks' offensive shortcomings after not getting a decision in his last two starts - both wins for Arizona - despite posting a 3.95 ERA in those games. He received one run of support in each contest.

Tampa Bay (12-16) has had a hard time living up to expectations after reaching the World Series last season, in part because Upton and Navarro are batting .157 and .179, respectively.

Both have had problems against Burnett (2-0, 5.40 ERA) as well. Upton is 4-for-18 (.222) with 10 strikeouts versus the right-hander while Navarro is 4-for-23 (.174) and has struck out six times.
Burnett is 8-4 with a 2.94 ERA in 17 starts against the Rays, the most recent a 7-2 road victory April 14.
Burnett limited Tampa Bay to two runs and three hits while striking out nine over eight innings of that contest.
Sonnanstine is 2-1 with a 5.65 ERA in five starts versus the Yankees.

Red Sox relievers have a 1.80 ERA in 11 games at Fenway Park, including a 1.19 mark during the club's nine-game winning streak there - its longest since taking 13 in a row in Boston from May 2-June 5, 2008.

Seattle could need a big effort from its bullpen with Carlos Silva slated to start Wednesday. He's coming off his worst outing of the season, allowing six runs, six hits and walking four in 3 2-3 innings before Seattle rallied to beat Oakland 8-7 on Friday, but yesterdays contest was costly, with reliever Shawn Kelley straining an oblique muscle after throwing three pitches in the 10th. Kelley, who was being considered to finish games until closer Brandon Morrow returns from the disabled list, is likely headed to the disabled list.

Carlos Silva (1-2, 7.36 ERA) is 5-4 with a 4.10 ERA in 14 starts against Kansas City.
The Royals will counter with Sidney Ponson (0-4, 7.16), who has been just as bad. The right-hander has given up 16 runs in his last three starts, spanning 15 2-3 innings.
Kansas City hit .295 against Seattle last season, winning seven of nine matchups.

After a poor start, the Texas Rangers have begun to hit on the road. That doesn't bode well for the Oakland Athletics and their struggling pitching staff.
The Rangers hit .187 en route to losing five of their first six road games. In going 5-1 on the road since, however, Texas is batting .297 with 14 home runs, nine doubles and 35 runs.
The A's continue to struggle at the plate, batting .236 and hitting an AL-low 13 home runs. Oakland has lost three straight to fall six games below .500 for the first time this season

Royal crush
On Wednesday night, the Royals face Carlos Silva and his fastball that Little Leaguers could hit. Last season, hitters batted .332 against his fastball; this year, they're hitting .297 against the veteran's heat. Of the 163 fastballs that players have swung at in 2009, only six swings have missed. So which fastball-mashing Royals should you make sure are in your lineup?
2009 Batting average against fastball
ML average, .285

Mark Teahen, .339 BA
Mike Jacobs, .314 BA
David DeJesus, .299 BA
Houston should hearten Harden
What should we expect from Rich Harden on Wednesday night against the Astros? It doesn't make sense that Harden managed to strike out only two Marlins his last time out. The Marlins have typically let other pitchers rack up the K's (highest strikeout rate in baseball). Is something wrong with him? Harden's fastball in 2008 was the best fastball among starters (.193 BA against); this season it's just about as unhittable (.209 BA against) and the velocity has barely changed. So his performance and velocity checks out on his best pitch. The problem for Harden so far this season has been getting out lefties, who have hit .343 against him overall and 4-for-8 against his changeup.
As for the Astros, Michael Bourn is the only true left-handed batter that Harden has to worry about, but Lance Berkman and Kazuo Matsui are switch-hitters who likely will bat left-handed. Ironically, Michael Bourn was the worst changeup hitter in the game last year (.100 BA against) and Berkman was one of the best (.375 BA against). Berkman could have a big day, but Harden shouldn't have trouble with the rest of the lineup.

Dan Haren, Diamondbacks: If you look at his ERA, WHIP and strikeouts, you'd think his record would be similar to Zack Greinke's. Instead, he's just 3-3 despite not giving up more than two earned runs in any start this year. In fact, he lost his first three starts despite giving up four runs, and that's because his team scored only one run in those games. The D-backs' offense has awakened a bit, giving him 11 runs of support in his past two starts, so there is hope that Haren will get more attention for his pitching since his numbers other than wins are pretty amazing so far.

Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers: The overall numbers don't look all that appealing, but that's because of those two awful outings in which he allowed 15 runs in nine innings. However, in his other three starts (including a 13-K gem against the Giants on April 15), he's allowed just two earned runs total and been saddled with three no-decisions. In those games, he's gotten just three runs of support, and the bullpen has blown two leads for him as well. There might be some consistency issues all year long, but Kershaw could be a buy-low guy given some of his bad luck.

Kevin Slowey, Twins: A 4-0 record is a nice way to start the season, even if it comes with a 5.17 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. While guys like Haren, Cueto and Santana struggle with run support, Slowey has gotten a whopping 35 runs in his first five starts (second in the majors to Roy Halladay). That's how he can rack up wins despite two of the victories coming when he's allowed at least five earned runs. Slowey might be hit hard, but he's walked just two all season while striking out 23, and a .374 BABIP suggests that while he's been unlucky in some respects, he's been lucky in others.

The Twins have been up and down this year, but they're certainly glad to have Joe Mauer back. After missing the spring and the start of the season with inflammation in his right sacroiliac joint, the All-Star catcher hit a homer in his first at-bat Friday and is 7-for-17 with three RBIs since returning. Michael Cuddyer is also starting to heat up with two hits in three straight games heading into Tuesday. Former American League Most Valuable Player Justin Morneau has four homers and 11 RBIs during his past 11 games. The Twins lead the AL with a .990 fielding percentage, but their 5.29 team ERA entering Tuesday was the fourth worst in the AL. Minnesota has dominated the Orioles the past three years, going 16-6 against them, including 10-3 at
