I'm wondering if anyone was familiar with inpatient treatment centers for problem gamblers. Any success stories, problems, how after treatment works at some places. 12 steps I'm familiar with, are there other alternatives?

thanks in advance

The only thing that is offered is trial drugs, and you don't need that shit.

Also, if you participate in a study, you might not even get the tablets. You might fall into the control group and get placebo. Fuck that too.

In my view, 12 steps work only after a person has hit bottom. Maybe you have, maybe you haven't .. but until you do, the 12 steps aren't that effective.

Well, thanks for all your input gentleman. I 12 stepped for booze, notice that dropkick murphys avatar.

My initial question was that there are cognitive therapy based options versus 12-step based and the big book, or whatever the alternative is with GA.

If I told you I'm not a heavy gambler I would get laughed off the forum, I'm actually looking at one place in particular on the east coast that advised concerned parties of the gambler not to pay their loved ones debts and to get them into treatment instead.
Lamen's terms - what the fuck is that about?

the gambling addiction centers are good; but the poker games
afterward are unbelievable.

I didn't word that right. the facility advised concerned parties not to pay their loved ones debts
taken from the site:

Should I Pay the Gambling Debts?

Often the friends and family members of the gambler will be tempted to pay the debts that have accumulated.

Although every situation is unique, this is often a band-aid effect that allows the gambler the relief needed to continue gambling.

For example, if the problems caused by the gambling are removed (e.g. no more bill collectors calling), the gambler may be less likely to desire treatment, will sink back into denial of the problem, and continue the cycle of gambling losses again.

When given money without treatment, the gambling addict WILL GAMBLE AGAIN.

For this reason, money is better spent on treatment than the payment of gambling debts.

Unless unpaid debts are going to be paid limb-by-limb.

The MAIN problem is that 90% of the patients involved in gambling addiction center are there because of slot machines and scratch off lottery tickets.

Sportsbetting never seems to play too much of a role in those centers

It is saying what I said.

The guy has to hit rock bottom before he will honestly accept treatment. It's the only way.

Paying the debt only enables him and it's like giving him permission to gamble more.

I was in a bar a few years ago and a guy was worried about an NFL teaser that he had. Late in the game, he lost the teaser because of an interception. The guy was PISSED. I asked how much he lost and he said he lost a free $25 3-team teaser from BetOnSports. THAT WAS HIS BOTTOM ... and while I laughed at him back then, I wish I could be that pissed about losing a $25 teaser.

Bro, I wonder, how valuable would it be to get a gambling lesson? Im not being a dk, Im being real serious,

1. People Hire therapists to help them handle their emotional lives?
2. People Hire financial advisors to help with their $$$ planning.
3. People Hire assistants to get themselves organized?

I totally get the value of a program, However, as the saying goes, "theres no winners in a Gamblers Anonymous meeting"

Would getting tutored from a winning handicapper help you?

(Im not the one to give the lesson yet, in 2012 I will be)

PO69,

Please enlighten us on how you are able to glean this information
from the aforementioned treatment centers, and the role
sports betting plays in those that go there? Hmmmmm?
