I assume they can.

They ride 100's of races a year if not 1000's ...

How big is "big"?

I'm sure the well known names are way above that figure. My understanding is that they make their name here but make the REAL money in Hong Kong and/or Dubai. The best can get a mount any time of the year in various parts of the world and consistently cash.

They can make way more than that.. They get 10% of the purse money and get paid for every mount..

There is a similar thread to this one in the archives (see link below). The thing about jockey's and making money is for every big name rider who get mounts in triple crown and Breeders Cup races there are thousands who really struggle to make a decent living. Making weight is a constant battle for a high percentage of riders also.

<HR style="COLOR: #fdde82; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fdde82" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->Compared to average salaries of other pro atheletes at the major league level, jockeys are underpaid. Take a utility infielder in baseball for example or a back-up reciever in the NFL and compare what your average rider (not a big name) makes on the big track circuit.

Natrually all of the big name jockies like Edgar Prado, Kent Desormeaux, Corey Nakatani, Alex Solis, Mike Smith, John Velazquez, Michael Baze, and a dozen or so more get a lot of name recognition, get mounts in all the big races and make a lot of money but the rank and file average jockey at Podunk Downs (by that I mean 100 different tracks like Monmouth, Deleware, Finger Lakes, Mountaineer, River Downs and worse) have a tuff row to hoe to make real money, usually riding 1000 or more mounts a year and starving themselves to make weight, the life is not all that easy.
