Los Angeles –1½ +1.12 over FLORIDA
One has to question the move by the Marlins to not only promote John Koronka but to keep him in the rotation for another start after he was walloped in his season debut just five days ago. Here’s a guy with weak minor-league numbers and brutal numbers in 155.2 career major league innings. Not only has he never had success at this level but any confidence he had is absolutely shattered after the Brewers tagged him for three bombs and five runs in 4.2 innings. With all the great, young pitching talent in the Marlins farm system, this is the guy they’re asking to step in? This move has something to do with salary arbitration but it can’t be sitting well with the players or fans. The Marlins could contend but this is a kick in the teeth by management and the players may show up in body only today. Furthermore, Koronka is a lefty and the Dodgers are 9-2 against southpaws. Clayton Kershaw has filthy stuff but walks too many batters. You can be sure the Dodgers are addressing this and if he can throw strikes consistently he’s going to be a force. He’s allowed just 31 hits in 38 frames for a .230 BAA. In three May starts his BAA is .197. Expect the Dodgers to score plenty in this one and don’t expect the Marlins to respond. Play: Los Angeles –1½ (Risking 2 units). <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Milwaukee +1.06 over ST. LOUIS (1st 5 innings)
There are so many troubling signs concerning Todd Wellemeyer and it doesn’t hurt our cause that the Cards are laboring right now. St. Louis has dropped five of its last seven and that includes two of three to the then slumping Pirates. As for Wellemeyer’s troubling signs, well, I’ll start with his 56 hits allowed in 40 innings for a BAA of .337. He’s also been tagged for four jacks in his last four starts including two homers in his last start in just 4.2 innings. At home his ERA is 6.55 and his BAA is even worse at .366 but what’s even more disturbing is his fly ball to ground ball ratio. Consider that in his last three starts he recorded 42 fly ball outs against just 18 ground ball outs and that’s a sure sign of a disaster waiting to happen. Wellemeyer doesn’t strike out many and everything he does plays right into the Brewers strengths. Milwaukee has won four in a row and Manny Parra is getting stronger with each passing start. He’s been rock solid in four straight starts, allowing a combined seven earned runs over 23 innings. Hot vs cold with the superior pitcher gets the call. Play: Milwaukee +1.06 in the first five innings (Risking 2 units). <o:p></o:p>

Chicago +2.12 over TORONTO (1st 5 innings)
What we have here is the Jays Roy Halliday coming off his most anticipated start in quite some time, as the Yankees were in town with ex-Jay A.J. Burnett returning to face his old team and his mentor. The media ate it up big time and swarms of them were covering the game and the story. Toronto was abuzz and the game drew one of the biggest crowds in years at the Rogers Center. Halliday was dominating and the Jays cruised to an easy win. You cannot take the human element out of anything and I’m suggesting that the hangover of that last game, which had a playoff like atmosphere, could definitely see Halliday have a letdown here against a team he’s supposed to beat. Cito will very likely rest a couple of regulars today, as he often does on Sunday’s, especially since the Jays won the first two games of this series. Halliday’s stock is sky high at the moment and that’s the worst time to wager on anyone. By contrast, Gavin Floyds’ stock is at rock bottom right now after getting whacked in five of his seven starts this season, including his last two. Thing is, Floyd is a quality pitcher that’s going through a rough stretch and with absolutely no pressure on him here he could deliver big time. The Jays are much more vulnerable against lefties and are just 4-3 against them at home. Jays absolutely could find themselves having to play catch-up after five frames. Play: Chicago +2.12 in the first five innings (Risking 2 units). <o:p></o:p>

I love your write-ups. Thanks for putting the time into them. Just curious...If Toronto has one of the best pitchers in the MLB today going against a team who only got off 3 hits yesterday, why would Toronto have to play catch up? Isn'[t the value in the gaem line if Holliday can't go the full 8-9 innings? I hate steep lines myself, but love the Chicago value...just don't like going against the best. Thanks

No offense to others that post plays here, but we need more Sherwoods.

Besides being solid he gives food for thought.

Number five needs input as number five is alive.

while i definitely agree with that, unfortunately not many other posters feel the same way. i never got so many negative comments b/c of my write ups. i for one enjoy sherwood's analysis. i like to see his take on the games, and appreciate the work he puts in

Any idiot can pick a game.........take some time and give me your reason for the selection.

You get some respect, even if it's a loss.

My capping skills are better when I look at WHY.

Example: I played LAD today small(two Dodgers sitting)
My choice, but still won some dough. I read and capped it MY way with help from Columbo

Best write on the Rx

Thanxs
