As usual I go to bed around 11pm. Put on the ipod and fall asleep shortly after. I wake up to some sort of noise. I can hear something going on in the back yard area(it's fenced in and no one should be back there.) I can't tell what it is, but instantly my adrenaline starts going. I hear it again. Less than a minute has gone by. Its loud and sounds like banging on a metal screen door. I can't tell if its from my house or the neighbor. I hear it one more time and know something is up. I look over and the clock reads 1:30 am. I am unusually groggy from that shot of nyquil earlier.

I get out of bed and head towards the living room. The noise has ceased but I have to go have a look around. As I open my bedroom door my car alarm goes off. Now I am full on adrenaline pumping knowing someone is has attempted to break my back screen door and now moving to the car.

My car is just on the other side of this outside wall and I approach to look out the window. Just as I get to the window and start looking I hear the car door shut and the alarm turns off. It was on for less than 30 seconds. Doesn't sound like much, but I figure someone is rather determined and bold or has very slow reflexes for it to be on that length of time. I stand back from window and see someone slowly walk by. My heart is racing as I go to the other window by front door to see where they go trying to determine if there is more than one person. I suspect this low life to be solo. I hear the front screen door open. And then...yep the scum bucket tries to open my front door! I stand back about three feet wondering if this freak is going to try and kick in my door.

I don't have much time if sometihng is to happen. Time has come to slow crawl and seconds feel like hours. I decide I need to let this POS know someone is hear. I shout "Who's there! I am calling the police!" to ward of any attempts at breaching the front door.

I hear this POS actually respond. He half mumbles something like "It's Dave. I'm a friend. I am not some weirdo....go back to sleep." I stand on guard for about 5 seconds not sure what is going to happen. I go to the window and see this slime bucket walking slowly down the driveway toward the street. I try and get a description but can only see big hair and a red long sleeve shirt. He sounded and looked to be in his mid 20s. I also suspect he was intoxicated.

Start scrambling to find the cell. Not here, not there. Where did I put that thing? There it is. Open up the phone and dial 911. Yep, the battery goes caput. Fuck! I plug the thing in and dialed again. Tell the operator what happened. She asks if I need officers to contact me. I decline, not wanting to wait around all night.

I see my neighbor has a light on. I text her and tell her I called the police and I am alright. Even though my heart is racing, I go back to bed to try and sleep or at least rest. The phone rings. It's my neigbor calling me an hour later (about 2:30am). She was not at home and rambles on about how it might be her ex-boyfriend. I know it wasn't, but I entertain her drunken confessions for several minutes before saying "let's talk tomorrow, okay."

I lay in bed and get maybe an hour of sleep before the alarm goes off at 6:00am. That POS cost me a sense of security and a night of sleep.

Scariest moment of my life.

Moral of the story: always have the cell phone charged AND know where it is.
Do some sort of drill to prepare for this type of situation. I have done a fire drill, but never thought of doing a drill of this type.

I agree. But you can't really shoot someone that is not in your house.

Very good point here. You can't just shoot people as there have been cases where a guy shoots another guy breaking into their car and the shooter ends up getting charged.

You have to fear for your life or the life of others as in self defense. I know it's not fair but it is what it is.

Why didn't you go out and kick his ass?

This was one of the scenarios I was seriously contemplating, but ultimately decided against.
Now that I have had some time to reflect, there is one thing I would have done different. I should have grabbed my cell phone and walked outside trailing the guy while on the phone with the police. Of course, that would have been a mistake now knowing my battery was about to die.

I mean you probably made a good choice with what you did. He could've been high on PCP or had a weapon. You never know.

Something similar happened to my parents house about a monthe ago. My dad who is deaf was in the bathroom around 530pm and was the only one home. He comes out of the bathroom and sees 3 black guys in the house going thru the closets in his room and one had a laptop. When he walked out of the bathroom and saw him they dropped everything and got the hell out of the house. Coulnt believe it could happen especially in the middle of the day. Changed my parents way of life for sure. The next day they had adt install a 2k alarm system not to mention having to pay for the broken window and my dad being freaked out now.

So yeah i see what your going through and it isnt fun.

Too much dog shit. Easier to pick up shell casings. They don't smell as bad.
Happy Memorial Day Dante.
