You don't have to bet every race, try not to play too many exotics, I personally like to play flat win bets.

Make some coinage, have a good time.

:toast:

p.s. Don't buy any tout sheets.

Dont Bet who you think is gonna win, bet it to place. You will go home with money instead of no money.

I figured id do "SHOW" since top 3 would help me a bit more.
That's not a bad strategy but realize that in some cases you'll win like $0.40 on $2 with a show bet (heavy favorite that wins & you have him SHOW). The PLACE will give you a better return.

If you want to do some very basic handicapping, get The Form and look at the Beyer Speed Figures and then cross-reference that with the horses last race. The better-rested horse, with the higher speed figure, is usually a decent wager. Obviously it gets more complicated than that, but if you want the basics, that will keep you in action the whole night.

I agree w/ Dark Star. Don't bother betting to place or show. Pick 3 horses and box them in an exacta for a dollar. Just be sure they are not the 3 favorites. Maybe one fav, one horse that's like 5-1 and one thats at least 10-1.

Since you're at the track, check out the horses in the paddock before the races. Try to find one that has a bounce in his step, a shiny coat, and looks like he wants to be there.

Good luck.

in a similar vein, ask people who they like, thank them then quietly scratch their choice from contention. do this enough times until you have left the three or four horses you need to make your selections.

if you have a few dollars to play with try this,
Bet the #2 horse to show for $50 on EVERY race, dont even look on the sheet, and see what happens at the end of the day.

Don't bet the favorite... take two horses in each race that you think has a legitimate shot of coming in first or second (if the fave is one of them, skip the race) and wheel those horses up and down the card... for example, if you like the 1 and 2 and are giving you decent odds, wheel them up and down the card like this:

1/all, all/1
2/all, all/2

I have hit some very large exacta payouts doing this, all you need is your horse to come in with a big longshot and you'll have yourself a very nice payout coming your way.

EDIT: Just want to add, I made about $300 on Derby day doing this. It's the only way I play horses now.

Just have fun. Make it a day outing. Keep your bets very small and consider it a day of entertainment. If you win a little great. If you lose a little at least you had a good time. Best of luck.

get a copy of the opening line, then just before the race, check the tote board, see if there is any value (win, place, show), if there is, bet.

Watch the post parade and bet the one you like to win. If you like 2 or more box them in an exacta.

Have fun and keep your bets low.
