NCAA alleges major violations in Memphis basketball program under John Calipari

By Dan Wolken (Contact), Memphis Commercial Appeal

The University of Memphis is responding to an NCAA notice of allegations charging the men's basketball program with major violations during the 2007-08 season under John Calipari.
The allegations include "knowing fraudulence or misconduct" on an SAT exam by a player on the 2007-08 team, widely reported to be Derrick Rose. The player's name is redacted in the NCAA's notice of allegations, but the description of the player in the notice also pointed to Rose.

The NCAA alleged the prospective player became eligible after an "unknown individual" completed his SAT. The player, said the NCAA, "subsequently competed for the men's basketball team through the 2007-08 season, which included his participation in the 2008 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship."
The information was obtained by The Commercial Appeal on Wednesday through the Freedom of Information Act.
The player has subsequently denied the charge, according to university personnel.
If the allegations are proven to be true, the Tigers could be forced to forfeit their NCAA-record 38 victories and Final Four appearance.
"We take it very seriously. We don't condone it," said athletic director R.C. Johnson, who declined to comment in detail about the allegations. "We're doing a thorough investigation."
The report was the result of an NCAA investigation into the men's basketball program that began roughly one year ago. It does not include allegations of lack of institutional control, meaning Memphis would likely avoid serious penalties that would have an impact on the program going forward.
The report includes no allegations that would have occurred during the tenure of Josh Pastner, either as an assistant or head coach. Pastner was hired at Memphis as an assistant last June and promoted to head coach April 6.
Memphis, which received the notice of allegations Jan. 16, is scheduled to appear before the NCAA Committee on Infractions on June 6 in Indianapolis.
Calipari, who left Memphis for Kentucky on March 31, is not named in the report, but the NCAA has requested his presence at the hearing. Calipari did not immediately respond to a text message seeking comment.
The University of Kentucky issued a statement late Wednesday, noting there were no allegations against Calipari.
"First and foremost, there are no NCAA allegations against UK Head Men's Basketball Coach John Calipari," the statement read. "Coach Calipari was forthcoming with the University of Kentucky during the hiring process about any issues under investigation at the University of Memphis at that time. It is normal procedure for the NCAA to ask a former coach to participate in a hearing. Therefore, Coach Calipari will participate as requested.
"Coach John Calipari has received a letter from the NCAA stating that he is not at risk of being charged with any NCAA violations in this case.
"This is a University of Memphis issue and the University of Kentucky will not comment any further."
Calipari also responded in the statement, saying, "Even though I'm not at risk, I will fully cooperate with the NCAA hearing. Beyond that, I concur with the statement from the University of Kentucky and will have no further comment."

And of course, Derrick Rose's transcripts were changed in high school.

most reports are saying they arent the type of violations that will follow him to Kentucky.....they can be thankful of that at least...but as a Hoosiers fan, trust me when i say, it doesnt always pay off to get a "tainted" coach, even when he's good....it killed us

Sure seemed like a coincidence when he left Memphis.

There are many issues here:
-What did Calipari know and when did he know it?
-What did Memphis know and when did they know it? Not the first time the NCAA has knocked on their door.
-What about the recruits that followed him to UK?
-If guilty, will Memphis have to return their Final Four money?
-How many stud recruits get their transcripts changed, SAT's taken for them? Bet more than we think.
-Why should Rose and Calipari care? They got paid.

Calipari is on Rome's radio show quite a bit.

I always laughed out loud when he tells Jim that the proudest thing he has done at Memphis is have a high graduation rate.:):)

Coaches are paid to win....at any costs...NCAA hoops is a farce , when they talk about "doing it the right way" and graduating kids. Too Funny.
College Presidents talk out of both sides of their mouths. When was the last time a coach was fired for his graduation rate? Win and you have employment. Lose with integrity and stand in the food stamps line. It's just business. Multi Million $$ Biz! And boy how those wealthy Alums and boosters love a winnah!

Not at all costs. Coach K, Roy Williams and a guy like Jamie Dixon are doing it the right way. Could they have cheated? Sure, but there is a proper way to run a program and coaches like Calipari will do anything it takes.

Enfuego:

With all due respect, I am very familiar with Roy and Jamie. If you think Carolina and Pitt are not matching Louisville and Kentucky, you are very naieve. I think no less of these guys, because of what they are forced to do...just like every other D-1 Head and assistant coach. If you are not bending rules, you will not last. The NCAA would need one investigator per school, to make everything somewhat controllable & legit, according to the manual. Many of these collegiate athletes are taking a paycut, when they go Pro. Guys like OJ Mayo just don't show up on your doorstep and say I want to go to USC, with no prior contact in recruiting.

big surprise huh. He's one helluva baller but when you hear him speak in post-game/in-game interviews, I refuse to believe that he can legitimately put 3 grammatical sentences together let alone have a passing score on the vocabulary and analogy sections of the SAT. And the math section? Yea, i'm sure he passed that :):) I'd bet everything i have that he's never heard of Pythagorean theorem once in his life.

Having someone taking you SATs is actually quite easy. We did it in High School. Our friend was really smart and we were really good at making fake ids, a perfect marriage. You can take the SATs at a neighboring high school where no one knows you. You have some 60 y/o teacher checking the ids. It was a joke.

It was $300 bucks for him to take the test for you. He scored above 1300 on everyones test. One of my buddies even "earned" a 20k scholarship because of "his" SAT score.

Not everybody cheats, way too many people to shut up. There would be leaks everywhere, especially from discarded recruits or kids who never took the money or became pissed about something.

The requirement that a kid has to be 20 to be drafted has opened the door to a whole new set of opportunities. The kids that would be lottery picks out of high school are the ones to watch closely.

Cal loves one and done players, and he has a relationship with WWWW, and man that steers this type of player to certain schools.

Cal also accepts the likes of a Marcus Camby, who was literally illiterate when he attended UMASS. So the academically challenged seem to follow him around as well.

Ya, but your a UCONN guy. They aren't the definition of class. I'd put a Calhoun program just a notch below on the Calipari class scale.

Calhoun has been clean for 37 years and counting. Soon enough, the Yahoo hit job will be exposed for what it was, filled with inaccuracies, half truths and distortions.

when he heard a rumor that two of his players may have taken airline tickets to fly home for Thanksgiving from a wannabe agent (the same guy that was involved with Camby), he confronted the players. When they confessed to him, he made them confess to the NCAA. Kirk King's career was ended and Ricky Moore missed the rest of the season.

Compare and contrast that behavior to Squid's hear no evil see no evil defense as bullshit swirls all around him.
