PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A 23-year-old rancher whose family has fallen behind in their taxes and recently had a mobile home repossessed has claimed a $232.1 million Powerball jackpot on Friday, one of the largest undivided jackpots in U.S. lottery history.

Neal Wanless, who lives on his family's 320-acre ranch near Mission, S.D., bought the winning ticket in the nearby town of Winner late last month during a trip to buy livestock feed. He will take home $88.5 million in a lump sum payment after taxes are deducted.

Wanless, who did not speak publicly about the win until Friday, spoke for only a couple of minutes at a ceremony Friday, reading a prepared statement. He was wearing a big black cowboy hat and had a huge grin on his face during the brief ceremony.

"I want to thank the Lord for giving me this opportunity and blessing me with this great fortune. I will not squander it," he said.

Wanless said he intends to use the money to help those in need. "My family has been helped by the community and I intend to repay that help many times over."

He told lottery officials he spent the last week baling hay and doing other jobs around his family's ranch.

Wanless said he intends to continue ranching, albeit on a larger plot of land. He said he recently told his horse, Eleanor, that "It'd be nice if we go for a longer ride than usual on a bigger ranch of our own."

i hear you, i hate seeing some 75+ year old person winnings large jackpots.

As long as that young dude stays in S.D. he should be alright, cause he is probably some good christian boy, if he gets to Vegas and sees the bright lights big city it's over. Hookers and cocaine and booze and gambling here i come. He'll be another tv movie of the week story.

Payment plan is retarded. You do much better with the lump sum unless you are retarded

because if he is smart and invests alot of it it will be worth a hell of alot more than 232million 30 years down the road. Plus who knows how long one has to live.

I really couldn't imagine being in that position at such a young age.

Am I the only person wondering why he was buying lottery tickets if he can't afford his house payment?

Welcome to South Dakota people. Not really the smartest people in the world.

Actually played baseball in Winner, South Dakota many years ago.

After the game we went into the local tavern. I have never seen a bigger collection of people of incest in my whole life. Very scary.

See I totally disagree. James and this kid are two very different situations. James has been in the limelight since he was a sophomore in high school. He then went onto skip college and be the #1 overall pick in the NBA. He is known as the chosen one, king james, etc. LeBron has all of the pressure in the world on him to live up to these standards. If he goes throughout his whole career and does not win a Championship he will be a huge huge letdown.

On the other hand this kid wins 80+ million dollars and does not have any pressure or does not he have to do anything for the rest of his life. He gets to buy a big ranch and ride around on Mr. Ed all day long.

Honestly I would much rather be this kid then James. He can go out and do things and not have everyone knowing who he is and just lead a normal life only with tons of cash in his bank account.
