Two teams that have had trouble scoring runs meet on Friday in San Diego as the Padres host the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Padres have the worst offense in the National League, averaging just 3.9 runs per game and Arizona is not much better at 4.2 runs per game. Chad Gaudin gets the start for the Padres while Doug Davis goes for Arizona.

Gaudin is 2-3 on the season with a 4.76 ERA. He has been up and down this season and was very bad in his last outing against the Diamondbacks in late May as he gave up five hits, five walks and seven runs over 5 1-3 innings. In his last start though he bounced back against Colorado and gave up just one run in 6 1-3 innings and struck out nine. "I really put it in my head and focused on it (getting ahead in the count) and not trying to be too perfect," Gaudin said, "I really wanted to dial it in and get ahead of hitters and attack." That win by Gaudin is the only one for the Padres in their last six games.
San Diego will have to play without outfielder Scott Hairston who was leading the team in hitting at .327 as he was played on the 15-day DL.
"It's going to hurt us to a certain extent," manager Bud Black said. "We need guys to pick up the slack."
Doug Davis gets the start on Friday for Arizona. He is 2-6 on the season but has very good ERA of 3.65. He rarely gets much run support. He is 5-1 with a 2.40 ERA in his last seven starts against San Diego.
