[h=1]Cubs designate closer Carlos Marmol for assignment[/h]The Associated Press – 3 hours agoCHICAGO (AP) -- The Chicago Cubs designated former All-Star Carlos Marmol for assignment on Tuesday, parting ways with the struggling reliever.
Chicago has 10 days to trade or release him or send him outright to the minors if he clears waivers. The 30-year-old Marmol was 2-4 with two saves and a 5.86 ERA in 31 appearances this season, striking out 32 while walking 21 batters.
An All-Star as a setup man in 2008, Marmol became the team's closer in late 2009 and compiled 117 saves, third on the Cubs all-time list. He was 23-32 with a 3.50 ERA in 483 appearances in parts of eight seasons with Chicago and is just the fifth player in franchise history with 20 or more saves in three straight seasons, along with Ryan Dempster, Randy Myers, Lee Smith and Bruce Sutter.
His best year as closer was 2010, when he finished with 38 saves in 43 chances. He posted a 2.55 ERA with 138 strikeouts and 52 walks that season and followed that up with 34 saves in 2011. But he blew 10 chances that year and posted a 4.01 ERA.
Fans' patience with him started to wear out, and he was booed at Wrigley Field in recent years. It was clear management was ready to part ways, too.
The Cubs had a deal in place that would have sent Marmol to the Los Angeles Angels for Dan Haren last winter, but that fell through. They also signed Kyuji Fujikawa, a longtime closer in Japan, but like Marmol, he struggled. He also suffered a season-ending elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery.
The Cubs' closer now is Kevin Gregg, the man Marmol replaced in 2009. He has converted all 11 save opportunities after signing a minor league deal with Chicago in April.
Besides designating Marmol, the Cubs released third baseman Ian Stewart, who had been at Triple-A Iowa. He was suspended two weeks earlier for ripping the organization on Twitter.

Carlos Marmol is the latest reliever to continue a long Miami Marlins tradition of acquiring bullpen reclamation projects.
Marmol, plagued by a history of wildness, posted an ugly 5.86 ERA in 31 games with the Chicago Cubs last year before being sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“What can you say' Bad year,” Marmol said. ”When you have a bad year, things happen. For any pitcher, when you don't do your job, it makes it frustrating for everybody."
But the Marlins are counting on better results from Marmol because of a change in mechanics.
"He looks like he's changed his delivery a little bit. I remember him over the past being a little bit more across his body,“ said manager Mike Redmond, a former catcher. "Now he's kind of squared up and centered up his front foot on his delivery."
Miami signed Marmol to a one-year contract worth $1.25 million after scouting him in the Dominican Winter League and liking what they saw. They are gambling that he can overcome control problems -- he issued 95 walks in 104 1/3 innings over his last two seasons.
"Hopefully, he can build off what he's done in the winter," Redmond said.
If he succeeds, he can be an invaluable piece of insurance for the back of the bullpen.
"I feel great with a new team," he said. "There's a lot of talent here."
So far in camp, Marmol, 31, has looked good.
"He's got a great slider and a good fastball," Redmond said. "Like all those guys, it's about pounding the strike zone and getting ahead of the hitters. It makes your breaking ball so much more effective."

CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Cleveland Indians have signed former All-Star closer Carlos Marmol to a minor league contract.
The 32-year-old righty reported Friday to the Indians' player development complex in Goodyear, Arizona.
Marmol was 0-3 with an 8.10 ERA in 15 games for Miami last season. He was signed by Cincinnati in May and released in November.
Marmol is 23-35 with 117 saves in nine major league seasons. He made the NL All-Star team in 2010 while posting a career-high 38 saves for the Chicago Cubs.
