Student who blew kiss to mom denied diploma

Superintendent defends move, but Maine teen’s mother wants an apology

PORTLAND, Maine - A Maine high school senior says he was denied his diploma because he bowed during graduation and blew a kiss to his mother.
Justin Denney was about to receive his Bonny Eagle High School diploma on Friday when he pointed at friends and relatives.
Schools Superintendent Suzanne Lukas ordered him back to his seat. She told the Portland Press Herald newspaper she was enforcing behavior rules.

Justin's mother, Mary Denney, said her son's showboating didn't break any rules. She told WMTW-TV "a kiss to your mom is not misbehavior." She is seeking an apology — and a diploma for her son.
The commencement at the Cumberland County Civic Center also was disrupted when a giant inflatable rubber duck and beach balls were thrown. One student was ejected.
Some parents want a review of commencement policies.

A diplioma is simply a piece of paper, whereas he would still be considered a highschool graduate. Correct?

The woman is allowed to enforce school policies. Best solution is for every voter to contact the school committee and insist she be fired or at least suspended. That should cure her overblown sense of entitlement

Might be "just a piece of paper" I think as a parent, Taking a Picture of your Kid receiving their Diploma is a Special Lifetime Thing.

I think quantum is Right, a nice Lawsuit would do the job :103631605

I always thought you'd have to be crazy to live in Maine. What's in Maine anyway? Farms?

these rules were well known for this group of students...he was pushing things on purpose..it back fired..good for the superintendent to enfore simple rules and have a great ceremony for all the others...he lost his chance at getting a photo real time...so be it...he still graduated..hopefully he will learn. This is a non story that the internet type press is pushing...at least its not a bad horrible story!

Like Try said, guessing this is a nothing story. Kid probably had a history of being class clown, probably got up on stage, took a bow, blew kisses to the crowd, was pointing and rowdying up the crowd... in essence, showboating, which was probably made clear before hand would not be tolerated. This is a nothing story, and the kid probably had it coming.

This school in maine, was the first to put a daycare in the high school back in the 80's. This school has a bunch of red necks and inbreads! Total loser school. Maine is a great place to live, this place isn't one of them :)

Why didnt he just walk over and take the damn thing. I know that is what I would have done. What's the superintendent gonna do? Get in a fist fight over it?
