Crackdown forces smugglers to get creative when shipping narcotics to U.S...

MEXICO CITY - Mexico's navy has seized more than a ton of cocaine stuffed inside frozen sharks, as drug gangs under military pressure go to greater lengths to conceal narcotics bound for the United States.

Armed and masked navy officers cut open more than 20 shark carcasses filled with slabs of cocaine after checking a container ship in a container port in the southern Mexico state of Yucatan, the navy and Mexican media said Tuesday.

"We are talking about more than a ton of cocaine that was inside the ship," Navy Cmdr. Eduardo Villa told reporters after X-ray machines and sniffer dogs helped uncover the drugs.

"Those in charge of the shipment said it was a conserving agent but after checks we confirmed it was cocaine," he said.

Drug gangs are coming up with increasingly creative ways of getting drugs into the United States — in sealed beer cans, religious statues and furniture — as Mexico's military cracks down on the cartels moving South American narcotics north.

President Felipe Calderon has sent 45,000 troops and federal police across Mexico to try to crush powerful smuggling cartels. But traffickers armed with a huge arsenal of grenades and automatic weapons are far from defeated, worrying Washington as violence spills over into U.S. states like Arizona.

Some 2,750 people have died in drug violence in Mexico this year, a pace similar to that of 2008, when 6,300 were killed.

Led by Mexico's most wanted man, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, smugglers from the Pacific state of Sinaloa are fighting a turf war with rivals. Guzman seeks to control Mexican and Central American smuggling routes into the United States.

Let's legalize it already and stop wasting money fighting a fight that isn't necessary.

I would love to see the look on the faces of these jokes the day the US announced drugs were being sold legally at a store.

There were 2 guys paddling surf boards this week from Tijuana to San Diego towing a 3rd surf board full of wrapped marijuana. Of course they were caught.

Yea, make it all legal. How about murder when someone pisses you off. Make that legal too.

Why should drugs be illegal? Anyone?

Everyone who wants them gets them anyways. We just waste a boatload of money chasing boats and jailing people

Certain drugs should not be legal. Heroin, Crack, and PCP for example...

You should be able to pick up a bag of weed at 7-11.

Take your pick

a) In-demand drugs (to the tune of billions per year) are controlled by a combination of private business and appropriate government agencies

or

b) In-demand drugs are 100% controlled by street producers, criminal dealers, gangs and cartels.

Murder involves at least one person who is an unwilling participant.

Drug use and distribution involves only willing participants.

When a murderer is caught, we have one less killer in our population.

When an illicit drug dealer is caught, he is replaced within a few hours at most.

None of this is the "point" , as I have studied this a little.

this is a government operation, and always will be.

it started as the War on Poverty,The War on Poverty is the name for legislation first introduced by United States President Lyndon B. Johnson during his State of the Union address on January 8, 1964.

led the United States Congress to pass the Economic Opportunity Act, which established the Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) to administer the local application of federal funds targeted against poverty.

The OEO was dismantled by President Nixon in 1973, though many of the agency's programs were transferred to other government agencies.

fast foward .. the logic being, drugs caused poverty ..hence an all out war on drugs ,,, which by all accounts = faulty logic.
