DETROIT –1.02 over Milwaukee
Despite a call-up making his major-league debut I’ll definitely take a shot on the Tigers and here’s why. First, the Brewers are the second best team on the field and secondly, their bullpen is so beat up, worn out and overused that once the starter is out if they’re not already losing they’re in big trouble. Furthermore, Milwaukee has lost seven of its last 11 games and they’re fortunate to have won three of those. In reality, they should have lost 10 of its last 11 after the Indians pen blew three straight leads late in the game. In the last four games the opposition has scored 35 runs on the Brewers and that includes 10 by the Tigers yesterday in a rain-shortened seven-inning game. Then there’s Dave Bush, who was torched for eight runs, including two more homers, over 3.1 innings on Monday against the Indians. Bush has been hit hard in five straight games and in June, in three starts, his ERA is 9.42. Incidentally, he’s allowed 17 jacks thus far in 78 innings. Alfredo Figaro is a guy that’ll come in and throw strikes. He walked just 16 batters in 68 frames at AA Erie while striking out 59. This kid has shot up through the ranks and has some tremendous credentials that include a 1.07 WHIP, which is a testament to his outstanding command. Last year in the Midwest League he went 12-2 with a 2.05 ERA and earned numerous honors. He’s taking a big step up in class but so what. The Brewers strike out a lot, as their 528 combined k’s on the year rank them once again near the bottom of the league. So, there you have it. The Tigers may not win but as a small pooch at home, against this sinking NL squad, they offer up some great value indeed. Play: Detroit –1.02 (Risking 2.04 units).

MINNESOTA –1½ +1.11 over Houston
Brian Moehler has allowed 70 hits in 50 innings of work for a BAA of .337. Scott Baker has allowed 72 hits in 74 innings and has walked just 12 batters all year. Baker’s 1.13 WHIP is one of the best in the majors and he has a BAA of just .248. The Twins have the AL’s best home record at 23-14 and are second in the majors to the Dodgers 25-10 home record. Minnesota is 8-2 in inter-league play this season and 22-6 since the beginning of 2008. The Astros are 1-6 against the AL after they had just five hits in Friday’s loss, as their batting average dipped to .236 during the first seven games of this nine-game road trip. That includes three games in Arizona and Texas, two of the best hitting parks in the game. So, the bottom line here is that Scott Baker is on fire while Brian Moehler is as pathetic as the team he plays for. Can this one turn out any other way? I think not. Play: Minnesota –1½ +1.11 (Risking 2 units).
