Why the hell did the Rays trade Edwin Jackson?

On December 10, 2008, Jackson was traded to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for outfielder Matt Joyce.[5]

Who the fuck is Matt Joyce? Rays were idiots. Jackson has always had a strong arm and was only 24. Trade him away and now he flourishes with another team.

Guy is a stud.

Could be the worst offseason move.

I've talked about this in other threads. It was a terrible terrible trade.

The Tigers would not have accepted Sonnanstine for Joyce, who has a very bright future ahead.

And it was urgent to deal at least one starting pitcher off of last year's staff because with the emergence of David Price, there would be noroom for six guys with clear starting ability.

Also not getting much play nationally is the local feeling that Jackson was just not fitting the Rays clubhouse, especially after they didn't use him as a starter in the AL playoffs and then kept him off the WS roster.

Probably the best thing for both Rays and Jackson was this deal, though true grading is not possible until probably 2011 since Joyce is still a high-level AAA player and unable to crack current Rays 25 man roster

You try to defend every trade they make. The bottom line is they made a very bad trade.

Once Joyce's track can be evaluated, we'll both know for sure

Jackson was the Rays fifth starter last season, so no future here with Price joining the staff.

I'm no stranger to watching my favorite team make bad trades. I was a Ranger fan from 1972-1999....heh

When the Rays make another bad trade, I'll be the first to denounce it. But the current regime has done nothing but make good deals that improve the club

I question the pitching coach more than the front office. Jackson has always been so inconsistent, Kazmir has probably gotten worse as his career has gone on, Shields and Garza are no better than last year, too.

Shields, Garza and Neimann all have ERAs well south of 4 since late April

The bullpen has been almost invincible over the past 15 games and if we give them about a half dozen mulligans they've been one of league's most solid over 72 games.

The pitching coach this year is the same one that took them from worst to first in 2008

all good here, fellas

Rays still +900 to win AL East at 5Dimes. Get yourself some

I don't think anyone expected Jackson to be this good. Joyce was pretty good for Detroit in '08 but isn't doing so well in TB. At the time it seemed fair.
