Despite New York City's proposal to crowd Coney Island with high rises, the original Nathan's hot dog stand will remain the venue for this year's hot dog-eating contest on July 4. For the last two years Joey Chestnut has beat six-time champion, and his arch rival, Takeru Kobayashi. But to clarify, last year was especially close. After they tied at 59 frankfurters in 10 minutes, there was a five-dog overtime! Whoever could shove all five in their mouths the fastest, won.
This year, Italy is sending its national champion, Franco Camerini, and Nathan's has been running a qualifying circuit around the United States in 16 cities, including Biloxi, Mississippi; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Norfolk, Virginia. The winner of each round moves onto the battle.
But, let's be honest. It's probably just another match between Chestnut and Kobayashi. If a recent battle in Los Angeles involving P'zones (a cross between a pizza and calzone) was any indication, Chestnut might have to hand over the Mustard Yellow Belt. Who are you rooting for?

play it every year usually soft lines and scalp out a little ketchup later..

over 58 1/2 -104 at oddsmaker for now is my play regualtion time.

(your 5 dimes is for 10 minutes regualtion only. not the extra dog eat off if its tied again.....they did not get 66 dogs in 10 minuies ever ... the 66 and 64 were the old 12 minute format so be careful...)..

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

Feeding frenzy! Man vs. elephant in new Coney eating spectacle

By Mike McLaughlin
The Brooklyn Paper

Through the eons, the human race has never faced a challenge like this before — an eating contest against elephants!
But Coney Island is bracing for just such an unprecedented spectacle on July 3 with three brave — and perhaps naïve — souls daring to square off in a hot dog bun-eating contest against a trio of pachyderms from the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
“The human are hoping that their superior intellect comes into play. For instance they can dunk the rolls in water [to minimize their volume],” said George Shea, the president of the International Federation of Competitive Eating, the governing body of all stomach-centric sports that is sanctioning the contest at the Ringling Brothers circus site on West 21st Street.
The human gustatory gladiators have another advantage over the gentle vegetarian giants. “Perhaps the elephants won’t understand the word ‘Go,’” Shea speculated.
The rules are simple. Whichever team eats more standard-issue frankfurter rolls in six minutes will be declared victorious. Individual honors will be dispensed on the single creature that stomachs the most starchy carbohydrates.
The odds are clearly in the elephants’ favor.
According to circus handlers, the beasts gorge on 200 pounds of food a day and can devour a loaf of bread, a staple of their diet, in one and a half seconds.
“When most people see elephants, they see the majesty of nature. To me, I see an arrogant animal that needs to be taken down a notch,” said an unabashedly pro-human Shea.
A win for mankind would be a major breakthrough in the world of inter-species eating contests. A Kodiak bear once thrashed six-time hot dog-eating champion Takeru Kobayashi.
The gluttonous grudge match between man and beast comes on the eve of the annual July Fourth Nathan’s hot dog eating contest, an all-human affair that will see a rematch between two-time world champ Joey Chestnut and Kobayashi.

Elephants are pretty smart, they'll know when to start. Now how fast they eat and how much they'll want to eat is unknown to me.

Online chat this morning Chestnut says his results in training varies. Said his total could go up 5 or down a couple on July 4th.

Getting the picture its very likely he'll eclipse 60 barring weather conditions.

o60.5 is a good bet imo.

I assume eating feverishly for 10 minutes could take its toll if its hot and muggy.

Is it ever not hot & muggy in NY in July? Plus they're on an island, and I would think have misters or fans blowing. Anyways...... Im on the over myself

I know the science, but give me 3 humans vs the elephants in a rigged contest (hopefully) at +950 and I'll bite. Maybe they get some surly ones who won't cooperate

There is a cool little "Hotdog Shack" here in Upstate South Carolina right on the main turnoff to a popular lake. A sign on the wall says 450 hotdogs are eaten every second in the United States. Can't verify this information, but if true, I thought it was an interesting piece of trivia. You can get a slaw dog plate with hand cut fries and a drink for 4 and some change, Not a bad lunch if you are on a bidget these days.
