British Open odds will give Padraig Harrington the benefit of the doubt this week at Turnberry, as he is the two-time defending champion. But it’s been a downright miserable year for the Irishman, and he’ll have to fend off a long list of challengers, as well as his own swing, in order to come close to a three-peat.

British Open Betting – Thursday, June 16, 2:30 AM ET

Harrington has odds of +2200 this week, and even though he won the Irish PGA Championship, it’ll be tough to make him one of your sports picks. Before winning the Irish PGA, Harrington missed three straight cuts and four of the last five. Harrington made some swing changes after the season, and they’ve yet to pay off in any way.

Of course, it’s also tough to three-peat when you have Tiger Woods lurking, and the world’s No.1 is the offshore sportsbook favorite at +185. Woods has won two of his last three starts, and he’s made the top 10 in all eight stroke-play events he’s played since returning from the knee injury that caused him to miss the second half of 2008, including the last two majors. Woods has three Open titles and has finished in the top 10 five times, but on a course he is unfamiliar with, it’s not looking good for Tiger.

A pair of Brits could steal the show at Turnberry, as Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter represent the best chances for England’s first Open win in 17 years, when Nick Faldo won at Muirfield. Both share British Open odds of +2800, and Westwood has been playing very well in Europe, while Poulter has finished in the top 20 in each of the two majors held this year. He also finished second to Harrington in last year’s British Open, and is looking for a big win to match his even bigger ambitions. Betting management players may want to take a chance on the Englishmen.

A darkhorse worth riding to the finish line is Steve Stricker, who is rated at +3300. Stricker has won in two of the last four tournaments he’s entered in, and he has top-10 finishes in each of the last two British Opens. He’s accurate off the tee, and we know Stricker is one of the best putters in the world, so he could be worth a shot as one of your sports picks this week.
