Grandchildren left in car while Fla. woman gambled
(AP) – 4 hours ago
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A Florida woman has been sentenced to 14 months of house arrest for leaving two grandchildren alone in a parked car while she went to play the slots.
A Broward County judge also gave the 54-year-old woman three years' probation Monday.
Authorities say the woman left the children in a car parked outside a Hallandale Beach casino in August 2008. The windows were down, but the air-conditioning was off.
A witness saw the 2-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy in the car and told the casino's security.
The prosecutor tells the South Florida Sun Sentinel that the woman had pleaded guilty to charges including felony child abuse and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Seems to me 14 is old enough to be left in the car, but not for a casino visit, and with a baby.

I think this should be OK, if it were a grocery store or something.

JOLIET

Couple at Joliet casino charged with leaving kids in van

Tribune staff report
August 19, 2009

Chicago couple who left their two boys in their van at a Joliet casino were cited over the weekend for leaving children in an unattended vehicle, police said.

Maria C. Ayala, 45, and Juan J. Ibarra, 49, of the 6200 block of West 59th Street returned to their van about 1:15 a.m. Saturday, about 30 minutes after police had arrived on the scene, police said. Ibarra told police he had gone into the casino to find Ayala, who was gambling, police said. Harrah's management called police after casino security saw the children, whose ages were unavailable, in the van about 12:40 a.m., police said.

First off, I'm not supporting this womens actions, but it doesn't give us any information. What if she just ran in for 10-15 minutes, is that really so bad :think2:

Also, one of the kids was 14 years old, it's not like she was leaving two toddlers in the car. The windows were also down, but the air conditioning was OFF - God FORBID!

Bermes left his dog in the car with his daughter.

Steve Jefferson/Eyewitness News Anderson - Police say it was nearly 100 degrees in the car when they found a ten-month-old girl left alone with her dog in a casino parking lot. Police arrested the girl's father after they say he was gambling inside for at least an hour.
Anderson Police arrested Kevin Bermes outside the Hoosier Park Casino after finding his daughter in danger.

"We did find a ten-month-old girl in the back seat of the car and a large dog on the floor of the car," said Mitch Carroll, Anderson Police Department.
Bermes parked his car in isle B-1 at the casino. His daughter's skin was clammy to the touch and police say the air conditioning was not on.
"It was nearing 100 degrees in the car, not to mention the child was covered with a couple of articles of clothing," said Carroll.
James Leist is director of security at Hoosier park.
"We try to prepare for about anything you can think of. This is the first time something like this has ever happened," said Leist.
The 23-year-old father returned to his car in the parking lot and that's when police say he explained what happened. Leist says after Bermes told them he only spent a few minutes on the slot machines, they checked surveillance video.
"With surveillance we found out the car had been here approximately an hour," said Leist.
Anderson police officers arrested Bermes for neglect of a dependent and animal cruelty.
Animal Control workers have cared for the dog since Bermes' arrest. No one answered their door. At their Hillcrest Woods Apartment last June, Metro police arrested Bermes after the child's mother called 911. The woman told the dispatch operator that Bermes spat on her. When she pushed his face away from her, she says he grabbed her by the throat.
Now, police say with one case pending, Bermes will face the odds in yet another criminal case involving proper care of his daughter.
"You have to play the odds out and it's likely something could happen," said Carroll.

Couple charged with neglect after leaving 8-year-old alone while they played the slots

By Rebecca Catalanello, Times Staff Writer

Published Friday, January 1, 2010
<HR noShade SIZE=1>TAMPA — A Port Richey couple rang in the new year playing the slots at Seminole Hard Rock Casino.
The only problem, according to Hillsborough sheriff's deputies: the frightened 8-year-old daughter they left unsupervised at the La Quinta Inn for seven-and-a-half hours while they gambled.
Donovan and Nancy Jewell, of 7421 Bent Oak Circle, were both arrested early Friday morning, charged with child abuse by neglect after deputies say they left their daughter alone at the hotel, 4811 Hwy. 301 N in Tampa, from 9 p.m. until 4:30 a.m.
The girl told deputies she fell asleep in the room around 10 p.m. and awoke at 1 a.m., scared that her mother wasn't back yet.
She went to the hotel lobby for help. When deputies arrived, an arrest report states, the girl was crying and distraught.
After some questioning, the deputies contacted police at the nearby Seminole Hard Rock Casino and learned that the parents had a player's club card in use there.
According to the casino's web site, the card is given to frequent fliers to the slots machines.
Nancy Jewell, 41, and husband Donovan Jewell, 42, were booked into Orient Road Jail at 8 a.m. They were each being held late Friday on $2,000 bond.
