Dateline NBC did one of those stings where they check stores to see if they honest about the lottery tickets.

Well they checked 500 stores and 90 stores lied to customers as to whether they actually won anything on their scratch off tickets. In 59 of those cases, the store kept the "fake" $1000 winning tickets and had a family member cash those tickets.

Here is what really happened. California Lottery officials would have someone go into the store and ask the clerk to check out their tickets for winners. Then the customer would go around the store and come back. Well in 90 of those cases, the clerk told the person that the tickets were losers. Then of course, these tickets were fake and 59 people cashed the tickets. Of course it was mainly store owners who were "not from the US" who cashed almost all of the tickets!

Here is what happened in Texas at a few stores when our local TV station did an undercover report. Well they had heard from customers that these stores ROUTINELY would say that a winning $20 ticket would be only $20 for example. Well in alot of cases, of course it would be $30 or $100 or so. The clerk would act like they made a mistake if someone said something. Also, these same stores would NOT even run the ticket through the computer most times and just ask the customer how much they won and then they would just look at the ticket. Well the problem is that alot of those tickets can win multiple times or have a bonus box. The worker would give them their $20 that they thought that they won and then they would check the ticket later. This of course is not illegal and the customer is actually happy, but it is against lottery rules.

The TV station had a few winning lottery tickets where there was a double winner involved. They only did this with winner of less than $100, then the station didnt want to be out to much cash. But each of 4 times that they presented a winning $10 ticket, they were given $10 3 times and $20 once. Each of those tickets was a winner from $50-100. The employee didnt scan the tickets any time. Of course each of those stores were owned by Pakistanis.

In another case from that dateline show, a guy went to check his ticket for the LOTTO. He had heard that someone from that store won a secondary prize of $100,000 for 5 of 6. Well he played the lotto almost everyday at that store. He waited a few days and brought about 5 tickets in to check. The clerk was busy and put the tickets aside while he chatted with the man and other customers. Then you could see on tape when the clerk glanced at the ticket, then he went to back of the store for a second. He then came back and scanned another ticket that showed a winner of $4 and gave it to the man with the receipt. He was happy and bought some more tickets. That same man then saw a story on TV how no one had claimed that $100,000 and somehow the stores videocamera tapes were given to the news and at that EXACT time you could see who bought the ticket. It was this guys wife and you could see him at the store as well.

Well he called Lottery officials and explained to them this story. Strange thing is that the Lottery already were investigating this same store since they had cashed winning tickets over $70,000 in the past year NOT INCLUDING this $100,000 which someone had showed up to claim the day before. Well he ended up getting his money about 1 month later the clerk was arrested.

But these stories should convince you to be a bit more wary of your lottery tickets when you present them to the store for payment

The toughest tickets are the BINGO tickets. NO TELLING how many big tickets never get cashed.

NEW YORK Lottery officials would not permit Dateline to enter the stores and try to deceive the workers. They sent out a MASS message to all retailers for 4 days warning them that Dateline was trying to see if any of them would try and steal.

Hell then NEW YORK lottery officials sent out emails to every state lottery asking them if Dateline had contacted them yet. What is New York trying to hide?? They must know that there stores might be cheating. Hell most of the stores cant even speak English!

First of all.........correct me if I am wrong ........but isn't your lottery (I am not from the US) mainly sold in convenience stores or stores located at gas stations?

if so I can tell you that in as many as 40 trips..........many of which involved going into such type of places.........I must have seen a couple of actual 'Americans' .....and this was DEEP into Idaho. So anyone with a clue knows that most of the store owners or managers whatever are immigrants........in other words, that result is not significant.

Second.....about the pakistanies......Allah would be appalled , I GUESS we should cut one of their hands..........

Finally, I find it SLIGHTLY disingenious to ask someone "did I just win?" when you can do this by yourself.

The scanners in Michigan will show you the amount for smaller winners. The bigger winners ($600+ I believe) will say See Retailer, as they don't want others to know you have a big winner for your security. This is where people get scammed. They hand over the ticket to the merchant, he scans it and says you won $5. You take the money and leave.

One should write down the control number at the bottom of the ticket.

You would be surprised how many don't. Many only play the lottery when the jackpot is high.

When the agent scans your ticket a ticket will print out for the winnings so ask to be shown this ticket. Also the same if it's a loser. The losing ticket won't print. it gives you the option to print or clear screen on losing tickets in Penssylvania.

I think an investigation should be done on the Lottery! Especially on their Instant ticket games.........

How can they say 1 in 4 wins, lets say you buy a $5 ticket and win $5 did you really win? Or better yet you buy a $1 ticket and you get a free ticket did you get your $1 back.

Look up the Salary of your Lottery Director and google contributions to your Govenor and connect the dots.........

When I worked at the liquor store the big problem was the people who would come in with scratch off tickets that were winners but had already been cashed

I wasn't sure how that scam could ever work, but I guess if someone behind the counter is trying to scam you it just might. . .

I saw this payout and will definetly say the Lottery needs to be audited!

0 players matched 5, jackpot rolls to $360,000.00
201 players matched 4, each receiving $98.00
5,377 players matched 3, each receiving $6.00
46,841 players matched 2, each receiving $1.00

Matching 4 numbers has always paid at least $300.00. I don't believe 201 winners is high but will look at previous payouts

You be the judge

My verdict is in....

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>01/16/09
Winning Numbers: 06 08 11 26 27

2 players matched 5, each receiving $775,000.00
337 players matched 4, each receiving $201.50
12,115 players matched 3, each receiving $9.50
135,585 players matched 2, each receiving $1.00

337 winners and they receive Double what the 201 winners won in the other draw?

Store owners as ticket scammers has been huge in Ontario. Millions of dollars has been stolen. It is now mandatory for you to sign your tickets, before a retailer is allowed to check them.

i do agree with the odds seem fishy on those scratch-offs, i hardly ever play them, but i know at the store right by me whenever i'm there i notice people playing 5-10 tickets of the same game at a time and lose and come back and grab 5-10 more and lose again.

i remember years ago it seemed the scratch-offs had odds like 1 in 2.89, 1 in 3.12, 1 in 3.56, but over the years it has gotten worse, now it seems alot are like 1 in 5.14, 1 in 5.77, 1 in 6.32, etc.
