It doesnt make sense to me why these leagues keep trying to compete with the nfl. arena had enough differences in the game to make it interesting. xfl had a good idea but going head to head with the nfl during their season is setting yourself up for failure imo. if they would have their league during the off-season i think their chances would be better

i do like some of their rules... but starting oct 8th (after week 4 in the nfl) doesnt seem like smart business

Like other new football leagues before, the UFL has instituted several mostly minor rules changes that will differ from the NFL's rules. Though the UFL has indicated it would mostly adhere to standard rules, there are a few differences, as follows:

* No Tuck Rule - The Tuck rule is one of the most controversial rules in the NFL. In the NFL, if a passer brings his arm forward in a passing motion and then loses possession of the ball as he is attempting to tuck it back toward his body, it's considered a forward pass (and thus an incomplete pass if the ball hits the ground). In the UFL, it would be called a fumble.
* Touchdown celebrations - Celebrations, individual or group, will only take place in the endzones and on the bench area.
* Fumbling out of the endzones- If the ball is fumbled out of the endzone, it will be placed back at the spot of the fumble, pending which team last had possession.
* Intentional grounding - A quarterback is allowed to intentionally ground the ball anywhere behind the line of scrimmage if he is under pressure.
* Instant replay - All reviews will be viewed upstairs by the replay official and he will only have 90 seconds for review.
* Overtime - Both teams will be guaranteed at least one possession. When a team scores, the other team will get a last chance to score on the next drive.

I don't think most know or remember how very close we were to discussing the USFL season about to begin instead of the NFL.

The USFL came soooo close to becoming the elite league until they lost that lawsuit.

But, will be almost impossible for the UFL or any other league in the future to come close to what the USFL did & almost pulled off....

This league might of been successful if it started after the Superbowl or in the spring. People do crave some kind of football after the NFL so this league could of run from February to May and done well in my opinion.

The UFL said it will embrace sports wagering as opposed to the NFL. Although the NFL wouldn't be no where as succesful if it wasn't for gambling in the first place. Have to say I like thier marketing strategy here as far as the different rules like celebrations and overtime. I expect the pilot year to be succesful enough to warrant a second season.

the xfl was an absolute joke and was doomed from the get go, but if this league goes head to head with the nfl also, then i give it 2 years max

If this league evolves into a feeder for the NFL it has a fair to middlin' chance to succeed.

Key points in my opinion:

1] Unlike arena ball, rules will basically be the same as NFL.
2] Look at the coaching. Reputable former NFL coaches such as Greene, Fassel, Haslett and others will provide an opportunity for fringe players who were late cuts and failed candidates for the taxi squads an opportunity to stay in the game and develop in a professionally valid way.
3] The official stance on gambling may pique a bit more interest.
4] The initial offering of 6 games can keep costs down.
5] While playing in the fall it apparently will not go head to head against the NFL or college.

The league will have to accept that it will be a Triple A or Double A operation. Should be able to keep costs well below NFL Europe and by having only 4 clubs may be able to keep the talent at an acceptable level to offer an entertaining product.

In summary may just fill a necessary niche as a feeder legue and may in fact succeed. Ticket prices and salaries must be kept low and television of some sort is an absolute must.

MUST NOT aspire to be a big league operation.

I think the UFL will survive.

Then again, I lost a $100 over/under bet on how long the XFL would last.
