I was too young to go ( 6), and my parents weren't exactly hippies... born around 1920.

Looks like the greatest concert ever !

http://www.woodstock69.com/performer.htm

I see a few top bands of that time absent, though !

Stones, Beatles, Doors, Kinks....come to mind

Why didn't they play Woodstock ?

Mainly money. The Who signed literally before they took the stage. Bob Dylan didn't play either, partly money, and his kid was ill. Not all the acts got paid even though they were promised.

I could actually picture a young Wilheim being there, but I guess Vietnam is a reasonable excuse to not attend !

Stones would have been a nice addition to Woodstock, for sure !

Why no Morrison ?

Sorry, should have read your link 1st, Stevie !

Also just read a piece from the Aug 14, 2009 Guardian (UK) which states that the Stones asked for too much money.

Led-Zep, J-Tull, Byrds certainly belonged there ! Doors and Dylan, also !

To me, the Stones really missed this one.... if it was just money, not a prior commitment.

I'm biased, though.... Stones are the best band ever, and Doors are the .... just the Doors....sort of a cult band, and I'm in that cult..... big time !

to me the Stones are 10X of Michael Jackson.

I was there! I was 17, took a bus to the site, dropped a litle orange sunshine, and tripped the entire week-end. Most of it remains a blur except for the mass of humanity I was mixed in with. I hitched home having no idea what I had just experienced.

Doug, I think it's reasonable to state that the future success of The Stones did not suffer one bit by their missing Woodstock.

Wow, no shit? I don't think I've ever talked to anyone that's been there. Do you remember the highlight of the weekend for you?

I agree, Steve !

I also think Mick and the boys regret being maybe 20k apart ? on a deal, for the event of a lifetime.

I don't know how big the Stones were in 69, but I'd guess they were pretty big, then ?

They are still the best Rock band that ever existed.

I always turn up the volume on a Stones song, turn it down for Queen.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is the only band close to the Rollong Stones !

Fuck Michael Jackson !

It's all opinion and mood, IMO I mostly prefer stones overall, sometimes a lighter Beatles slant, or maybe the Kinks.

In 1969, the Stones were easily one of the top two rock bands in the world. It was at that time, and remained for years after a quintessential question, "Are you a Stones guy/gal or a Beatles guy/gal"?

They were at that time and for years after doing "the event(s) of a lifetime" that make Woodstock Festival pale in comparison

They did a concert in Rio DeJaneiro a few years ago that pulled 1.2 million

The Beatles might fairly be described as the best four man rock band of all time.

But the Stones over the years have - for both studio and live performances - incorporated a fifth man doing piano, horn players of all kinds and of course a bevy of Colored Chicks going 'do-do-do-do-do"
