Also for those who have had a long marriage, what is the key to success?

Yes...live together first.

And take at least a couple of long drive (2+ days) vacations.

Big key to long term success - Have a constantly evolving shared plan for future months and years. The day one or both of you stop having an optimistic view about the future that is complete with a defined vision is the day that you will no longer be "one".

My wife and I just celebrated 25 years of wedded bliss. I think a sense of humour is pretty dam inportant. So is compromise. I've had to swallow my pride a few times and back down, but in the long run was well worth it. My wife and I don't fight all that often, but once in awhile you just got get good and pissed off at each other - clear the air and move on. BTW you can call me Dr. Phil.

Live with them but don't get married. Marriage is simply a women's way of changing a man.

I believe in the Gene Simmons style of living. I bet he still gets blow jobs from Shannon when he asks.

Yes .. to living together

No .. to getting married.

I lived with my girlfriend for 19 years without problems.
got married, then the relationship was over in under a year.

IMO .. getting married is a last-ditch effort,by either party to save a sinking-ship. Marriage ALWAYS leads to more problems than you never seen coming or expected.

I don't see a problem with living with someone and having kids without the marriage. This is the 50s anymore. Unmarried couples with kids isn't as taboo as it once was.

Marriage is a public misconception that everything is stable. Look at the divorce rate....close to if not over 50%. If you are the breadwinner than you are going to be paying for that divorce for a VERY LONG time whereas if you don't marry child support is about all she'll get you for.

But if she is rich or her family is...marry her ASAP!!!!

I've never been married but I would guess this is good advice. If you are together driving for 2+ days and you run out of things to say to each other then how will it be when you are married? Even if you run out of things to say if you each can find some way to pass the time then it's ok.

I oftentimes see these married couples sitting next to each other at events or on plane trips and they not only don't say anything to each other but they don't even look at each other. Ugh! What a trap to be in.

Yes, live together for sure.

Also, marry the person whom you would wish to change the least about.

Honestly, if your wife isn't your best friend, then you are probably not marrying the right person.
