Doug's review of the cheap ( like $19) hotels in downtown Las Vegas....

I just got back from Vegas today ( went to the other Bash), for a total of 6 days in LV. I'm not too fussy about rooms.... just a place to shit, shower, and sleep a bit ! All these hotels are right near each other.

Wed/day and Thur/day stayed at Binions. $19 room. Damn near as nice as GN, very satisfied. I'd take GN over Binions of course, but not by a lot.

Fri/Sat at GN. I know what to expect there.... pool is the main thing there. Not a great place to gamble at, IMO !

Mon/Tues , I had reservations at the Golden Gate ( never stayed there before). I checked in around 11:30 am, very fast check in. I take the ancient elevator up to the 2nd floor.... as soon as I get off the lift.... the whole floor smells sort of like dead cats, the room is like 85 degrees with the AC on max. I immediately head downstairs, and cancel my 2nd night before the noon deadline. GG had remodeled rooms with flatscreen TV's, but not much more. I think they use swamp coolers, or some 1950's AC technology. Great snack bar, though....shitty table games.

Goldengate is a place to eat at quickly , not a place to stay or gamble at. You can get the legendary $1 shrimp coctail ( with players' card) or a quality sandwich for like $7 late at night. That's all this dump is worth for.

Now I need a hotel for Tue/day. I walk over the Fremont where I've given them some action over the past few days. I talk to the pit boss, ask her to comp me a room for Tue/day after telling her my GG horror story. She confers with another boss, and gives it to me.

Cheapo Dougie's suggestion is this:

If the pool is important to you, and you'll be staying downtown.... then spend your 1st night at GN, check out ( keeping the key), then cross the street to Fremont or Binions, for half the price, and use that old key to gain continued access to the shark tank pool.

If it were winter, I'd just stay at the Fremont hotel ! I had to turn the A/C down/off there.

If you call GN a 4*, I'd call Fremont a 3.75*, and Binions a 3.5 *, GG would be like a 2*.... by the Doug system.

I haven't stayed at LV club, but here that is OK. Good reports on El Cortez, also

Fremont ( maybe $25-30 a night ?), was every bit as nice as GN, IMO ( but no pool). The pool don't matter much, I still have my GN key anyways, so I can still get in there. I've been crashing that pool since about 1989, when I used to live in LV.

AVOID THE GOLDEN GATE ROOMS ! That is the worst hotel I ever stayed at in LV, but eat there.

I hope this helps someone ?

I don't hang at LV sportsbooks. I don't Golf, played the poker, attended Friday and Sat/day , was sociable enough !

I tend to spend my time at the pool, or the concerts.....

liked the Wholigans....nice tribute band.

I hung with the SBR crowd !

binion's seemed so dark and shitty that it seemed you could could lose your ass in there casino then go and hang yourself in one of there rooms.... horrible looking hotel IMO

It could not hold a candle to the GN..not even in the same ballpark IMO

Dante: Are you judging by seeing an actual hotel room at B's ?

I'll agree that I don't like the casino there, but the actual $19 rooms were decent, IMO, more than decent in fact.

Fremont rooms blew me away, just a **** hair below GN, IMO.

Doug, I never saw you at the bash... where the hell were you? Was looking forward to meet you...

I stayed at Binion's too last week and it was perfectly fine. Love that place - good burgers at the snack bar, some soft lines at the sportsbook and 100.76% Deuces Wild. Them blackjack dealers working the corner aren't bad on the eye either.

But Dante is right, Golden Nugget is in another league.

Hard to complain about $90 for 5 nights at Binion's though. That's exactly what I paid, taxes/fees included. @)

El Cortez is nice just for a stopping place if you don't mind the nightclub next door being open until 2:30am and the crime around the place. When I stayed there, police were stationed at each corner of the building and someone was being arrested every time I drove into the parking structure.

OMG, Willie Bee told me you were BrentCrude. I saw BrentCrude afterwards and he looked nothing like you did (much larger). I was confused.

Frickin' Willie. :ohno:mad:)

Gyno suggested I get the shrimp cocktail at the GG. I also had a hotdog. Both were pretty good.

Mr. Leisure and I went back the following Saturday and the line was 1/2 long. I took off before waiting that long but that's how long Mr. L waited.
