Brad Penny asked for his release from the Red Sox last night and the team granted the request, according to a report in the Boston Herald.
He was already replaced in the starting rotation by Tim Wakefield in last night's 3-2 win over the White Sox and his release will make room on the roster for Billy Wagner, who accepted a trade from the Mets yesterday.
Penny was 7-8 on the season, but had just one win in his last 11 starts and had a 5.86 ERA.
"I enjoyed playing with all of the guys. I played for a great manager on a great team. I had a great time. I enjoyed it. I wish things had worked out better, but that happens," Penny told the Herald.
"I had some bad breaks and made some bad pitches. But I'm healthy, and that's what I'm happy about. This isn't last year, when I was hurt. If that had been the case, I'd be upset."
Penny signed a one-year $5 million deal with Boston in the offseason.
He is expected to be placed on release waivers today and would clear on Monday, but he can talk with teams in the meantime. He can't officially sign a deal until he clears waivers.
